[OOS] A couple of Intel 6-core Acer Recertified PCs under $400 on ebay, and an upgrade video showing how to upgrade PSU + GPU.

(Note: These are from the official Acer Recertified Store on ebay.)

In that video, check out 8:00:00 (8 min) in, when he puts in the GPU. He points out the knock-outs, then doesn't actually knock out the second expansion slot, when he's got a 2-slot card? And it still fits in OK? Am I seeing that right? LOL.

He sure did, and I guess it does, but why? Changes PSU, adds card, does not add exhaust fan = I am disappoint.

EDIT: First comment is him owning the mistake.

Still better video than the Verge PC Build :D
I've been building PCs for 35 years, the video is basic stuff, but nice to see everything can fit and what is possible. Also, I'll never complain about videos that help newbies get it done.

This makes no sense... i think he's an idiot.
He paid 349 for a case + cpu + ram.
Everything else he threw out and added.

You can get a i5-8400 / 9400 for 169-179.
You can get a much better case, one that doesn't starve your GPU of air for less then 75.
You can get a H310 motherboard for like 55.
You can definitely get 4GB of ram with the remainder.

What did he accomplish?
Oh youtube views....

I seriously do not recommend anyone copying him as its just plain out stupid and not even a deal.
Your better off hitting pcpricepicker and parting it out instead of doing this and having spare parts you will most likely never use unless u need to debug a broken PC.

This deal is not for you and I. It's for people that don't know how to build a whole PC from scratch, but still may want something decent (Intel 6-core), and a GPU, and of course, swap out the PSU for one that will support said GPU. This is for the "BestBuy crowd".

I knew that was why you included the video, but did not want to speak for you. And having worked with so many of the BB level customers, even the PSU changed is REALLY pushing it. It would terrify many of my clients to go that far. Just adding a 1650 that powers off the PCIe slot is as far as it should go. He should have shown how to go to Nvidia and let it detect and install the proper drivers too. Leaving it with the Windows provided, is a bad idea for gaming.

I mean, yeah, I've got a few friends, some of whom know how to build a PC from scratch, even though they claim to not remember how, and some that are more like the "BestBuy crowd", I build PCs for them once in a blue moon, they wouldn't necessarily want to build one from scratch, but they are comfortable swapping GPUs and such. I had those types of people in mind when I posted this.

The Maple Tree is the one brand I will never, ever buy new, used, or salvage. The only certain with it is premature and random deaths.

He also didn't mention you'll need a power adapter if you want to actually use the slimline DVD burner after the PSU swap.

As a side note, what happened to PSU deals? Used to be able to get quality PSUs for <$30AR. I guess they disappeared when mail-in rebates disappeared.

"Human Malware", supply-chain and production issues, and people (in the USA) got their Gov't Stimulus ("Economic Impact") $1200 per person checks. Which, it seems, everybody turned around and bought PC parts.

According to an excellent GamersNexus YT video about it, sales of PSUs in May, were approaching or exceeding Dec. sales levels, which is really nearly unbelievable demand, for that time of the year, and then given the supply-chain and production shortages on top of that, and then the US-China Tariffs on top of THAT, well, it's not a rosy picture for the consumer.

They also said that the issue is going to somewhat subside in June, which makes me hopeful.

Newegg had a (SFX-L, bah!) 80Plus Gold 650W Seasonic Focus PSU for $99.99 + ship + tax, which wasn't too bad, but you would need the SFX-to-ATX mounting plate, which is like another $15-20, if you can even find them.

Of course Tech Jesus was also the one telling everyone not to panic buy a couple months ago. Calling it that was a misnomer, it was properly described as savvy purchasing decisions to beat the clock on scarcity and price gouging. Which is where we are now. I agreed with Jay and Linus and advised as much here in the forums. I most certainly bought at that time for builds and replacement parts. Did Tech Jesus issue a mea culpa about it? Because playing the contrarian in the face of the obvious was not cool. Yeah, they qualified some remarks, and they had their hearts in the right place. But it still looked like an attempt to look smarter than everyone else. Hubris is a character flaw. And it did not take a crystal ball to know shelter in place, would have people that usually have no time for gaming, looking to get their game on.

Anyways, these systems are a fair deal all things considered/given the current state of the market.

Only if you intend to leave as is, with very minor upgrades like possibly a nvme/ram/ssd/hdd upgrade.
Other then that, anymore is quite pointless to beyond wasteful.

for example, i would not mind getting these for the office to replace old machines, however as my main or a PC gaming rig, you should really look somewhere else.

Hard to argue against that, value wise.
