A couple of car questions...

Question 1: My brother is moving to Michigan but now lives in Dallas. Would it be cheaper to buy an SUV in Texas or Michigan? Does it really matter?

Question 2: Is there extra rust-proofing on cars sold up north? I thought all cars these days are well protected against rust.

Answer 1: Really depends on your state sales tax, Michigan's Sales Tax is 6%

Answer 2: Rustproofing is a personal choice, if you brother isn't going to keep the vehicle more than four or five years then skip it.

1) Depends. The price of the SUV itself, taxes and registration are all going to affect the total price.
2) The "extra" rust-proofing is one of the oldest dealer tricks. There is no difference in off-the-lot cars AFAIK.

I think cars are taxed at a different rate than the sales tax. Maybe I should have clarified about the rust-proofing. I know dealers try to sell rust-proofing as a high profit item and you don't really need it. I was talking about the car itself as it comes from the factory. I remember cars driven in northern climates would rust bad because of all the salt on the roads. I think though with today's technology and painting techniques it is not much of a problem anymore.

In Michigan it's 6% sale tax on all vehicles.

Most modern vehicle comes with factory corrosion resistance and your pricey models come with soundproofing.

1) Price the SUV at Edmunds.com using both ZIP codes. Edmunds's pricing accounts for regional differences. If he buys it in TX, he'd have to drive a new SUV to MI, or is he transporting it?

2) I've read that not only is rust proofing a money-maker for dealers, but it may be bad for a vehicle? Anyone confirm?

Ok from someone who just moved from MI and owns an suv.
MY 2001 yukon has more rust on it than my 1975 scoutII.
Its critical to have new vehicles sprayed with a rubberized anti-salt coating. Herculiner trcuk bed liner, or take it in to a rhino liner shop, wash the bottom with soap n water and rhino line the bottom.

And usually there are Michigan (wayne county) specific deals offered no where else.

BTW, new vehicles are not as bad any more, hut they rust, I have a dime sized hole on a skid plate on the 01 yukon. Get that sh!t COATED out of the dealer!
