A couple games I'm finding are fun after not playing a while

Rogue/Nethack are still great games. I can't think of any other game that creates as much tension playing.

Dammit, I have plate mail and a good sword and hunger protection, I better be careful!

Serious Sam is still a lot of fun. There are bigger/more story/better technology shooters but .I haven't found any as fun.

The Talos Principle isn't that old, but still a very nice puzzle game.

Most older games are hard to go back to. Good to note those that are still a lot of fun.

Recently I have played Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, it was free through origin I think. Thief 2 was $2 or so from GOG a ways back, still a fun stealth game with great atmosphere. Half life games give me warm feels when playing them after years away.

I still have the 2006 Ghost Recon Advanced War fighter in box somewhere that I need to install again. I played last year on a i5+GTX 970 or 960, not certain which, and being able to "crank everything to 11" left me impressed with how good some of the aspects look for a game that old. IIRC it was one of the first to use PhysX, which is probably why blowing stuff up was still so satisfying nearly a decade later. Unlike the horribly dumbed down console version, being able to managed my team and put them exactly where I want them, still makes it one of my favorite tactical shooters ever.

AOE2 is also always a pleasure, but its a good multiplayer RTS, so those are always good regardless.

Just replayed Black Mesa, Half-Life 2, Episode 1 & 2 and enjoyed it again. I really want to replay Half-Life: Opposing Force and Blue Shift but nobody made it like they did with 1st Half-Life.

Currently going back through the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, but with mods this time. I beat Shadow of Chernobyl in a little over a day and didn't leave any side-quests unfinished and I was only able to make it halfway through Clear Sky before the save corruption got me. It actually happened twice to me, but the first time I was lucky and had a working auto-save about thirty minutes prior to my saves corrupting. This last time, my closes auto-save was almost six hours from my main save and I wasn't about to go through all that again. I just installed Call of Pripyat and grabbed Absolute Nature 4, AtmosFear 3, and Misery for my main mods and holy hell it's like a brand new game.

The one aspect I find funny about the series though is how the optimization differs between games so drastically. SoC I was able to completely max out graphically at 1440p with no issues at all. Clear Sky I couldn't put anything above High or else my FPS would tank to about 20. CoP, with the two major texture/graphics mods I'm using, I can completely max the settings and haven't seen a single dip from a solid 60FPS yet.

I never get tired of playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - and I like every game in the series.

If GSC would ever get around to giving this IP the attention it deserves, I would be a very happy man. Just reboot the thing with the originally planned ShoC map locations and a modern game engine.

I'd like to see the IP handed over to Deep Silver. GSC did absolutely amazing things with the series, but they didn't have the manpower/experience/dedication/etc necessary to produce a stable game. The bugs in those games are notorious for completely breaking the game (as I recently experienced) to the point it's completely unplayable.

I am patiently waiting for this Stalker mod to come out: http://www.moddb.com/mods/lost-alpha

You can actually play it already with v1.003 but I want them to fully complete it

Do they intend on completing that mod or has it been abandoned?

I played what there is of it, and I am disappointed. There's a reason why GSC cut half of that out...because it was pretty bad. I spent a lot of time in Lost Alpha, and it is equal parts amazing and horrible. I love a lot of the original environments, but it definitely needed some editing.

All the elements are there, but playing Lost Alpha you can see that they had this amazing world to build, but it's obvious they didn't have the money/resources/tech to hash it out.

Hell, yes! A good game is one that's fun to play, graphics only add ~10% more.
(Someone made some nice graphical versions of classic NetHack - 100% same game only a simple picture instead of "@") ;)

Plus my MAME emulator gets a lot of love.

what a coincidence, i just started playing Angband again. talk about roguelike ... the new release 4.0.5 is great, plays far smoother than the previous versions, and yet, you will still die to "the Drolem (offscreen) breathes poison. You die."

also,

i cannot understand people that still post on social media things like "War Never Changes". besides the fact that the "moral" in FO is pathetic, HOW THE HELL do people still play that, or Skyrim. Those game have basically zero replayability, you zip through the content, and once you have seen it, it's over. It's not like it's a challenging game or anything. I can far more easily figure someone still playing Minecraft rather than the Bethesda RPGs.

Pretty big update coming to KSP soon, so I've been picking it up again. Also thinking about throwing FSX back on and messing around with it. It's been a while since I played a serious flight sim.

I've also been thinking about going through the remaster Homeworld series. I haven't played it since the original came out.

Avoid acronyms not clear, whatever KSP is. After some consideration Kerbel Space Program comes to mind but people shouldn't have to try to come up with it.

Yep, Kerbal Space Program. Also Flight Simulator X, if that one isn't clear.

Loved the STALKER games. Played several times. Not to sound like a broken record, but one of my favorite FPS games is Painkiller. Played it years ago (Gold) and am now replaying from GOG Painkiller Black. Around 8.00 or so. DO NOT buy from STEAM. Their version of the game is broken!
What I like:
1. Balanced game play Weapons and ammo are just enough to keep you equipped...most of the time
2. Atmosphere Different levels have varied locations, scenery, none boring
3. Some puzzle elements such as finding secrets
4. Tarot cards aid in battles and you earn them by completing certain tasks each level
5. Graphics are good considering age of game
6. There is a story element, though not the main emphasis

I played Mafia 2 a month back just because when I played initially, I played on a very crappy computer. It's such a beautiful game, though nowhere as close to the original.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Game still has it after all these years. Non-HD version from GOG seems the best. Only problem is newer AMD video drivers don't like it for some reason.

I haven't felt passion for any good first person story driven shooter for a long time now... when they do come down they are a console oriented mess where they strip out quicksave and mess up the controls. I like replaying Bioshock series, Half life series, Portal games..... I like Skyrim but it's like a multi-hour process getting all the mods going again and that usually is enough to keep me from replaying it.

I plan to purchase GTA V when I can get it for under $20... maybe black friday will provide... I'd love to see a remake of GTA San Andreas but I'd say that's near impossible given the game's engine, it would have to be a complete redesign, not a half baked attempt like the Bioshock Remastered. I bet they could make good money redesigning San Andreas with V's engine and reusing all the old audio elements.

Another trend these days are to over complicate the controls, having 20 unnecessary buttons to do actions. What game was I going to try I didn't like the control scheme? Witcher 3. I really should give the controls a chance though I hear so much good about the game.
