a couple car questions...(rwd/fwd, auto/man, onery vs nfs4) :)

I get ALL my car info from this forum because of the car threads here.

I'm wondering, what's the difference btwn rwd and fwd? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each. I know that the general consensus is that people hates fwd's. Then why would manufacturers even bother making them? Is it because it costs less to manufacture?

Also, why the backlash against stick? Have you seen people using sticks in LA? ugh the horror. I'd never drive stick after seeing a some people I know drive stick in LA. (traffic everyday).

Also, how would one learn how to drive stick? I've never driven stick in my life, except in the arcades lol. I've always feared that when i do get a manual car, i'd break it because I'm trying to learn how to drive it with manual.

anyways, thx in advance!

oh and one more thing... I remember a thread here awhile back where a lot of people argued against onery in his choice of cheap RWD V8's. I recently rode in a grand marquis. I must say that the ride is smooth, and it didn't take much revving to get the necessary power to cruise like it did. It did feel a bit like a waterbed, but overall, it was roomy and comfy. And the outside design, imo, sucks lol.

I think onery was entitled to his opinion, and he did have a valid point. I think the flame against him was a bit uncalled for. We're (us young dudes)more used to pedal-to-the-metal high revving efficient power.
Both sides have good points, but i'm pretty sure you guys were comparing apples with oranges, as both type of cars have totally different feels to them and both have different target customers.

anyways, idle thoughts from a dude who knows nothing about cars. hehehe 🙂

Oh god.

Honestly, until you know the difference between FWD and RWD and what each is good for, please don't get behind the wheel of a car.

And stickshift > You because it's more fun. 😛

lol, that's why i'm asking what's it like.
I've driven both types, but never really paid attention to the feeling or anything. Well, I've only driven FWD like once (when my friend grew tired in the middle of a trip, and I took over driving his accord)

I mainly drove SUV's around (dad had a montero, then an ml300. Now i have a '97 explorer). All were obviously auto's hehehe.

and i don't think manual in LA traffic equates to fun 😛

Well, can't really tell you how it feels to drive each anywhere near as effectively as learning to drive on your own. Get your dad or buddy to take you to a parking lot (without poles) and get a feel for it.

If you use this forum as your main source of information about autos, you need to really seriously rethink what you are doing.

hehe i wasn't trying to imply that I was using this forum for car info. I know there's others like vwvortex and such.

Also, I can't help it but read a lot of the car threads here since they're full of info (at least for an auto n000b).

And it's more interesting to read replies from a community you've been with and known for awhile.

🙂

The main difference between FWD and RWD becomes apparent when a car is driven near it's limits. That's why FWD is used for non-sporty cars that aren't mean to be slung around a track or even driven aggressively.

Having never owned a FWD until recently, I can actually 'feel' the difference when driving normally. You just can't feel the power going back to the rear wheels, it's difficult to describe, but I'm sure others know what I'm talking about.

in a nutshell:

RWD handles better than FWD, but FWD is easier for noobs 😀😀

FWD also better than RWD in snow

i've always been under the impression that auto makers tend to make FWD's rather than rear wheel drive mainly for safety reasons. FWD cars tend to understeer, making them less likely to spin out going around turns in the rain / snow. However overall control of the car is lessened becuase having your front wheels pull double duty (drive and turn) makes it very hard to really take turns and handle on the twisties like you can in a RWD.

that and FWD is cheaper to make

which has always suprised me -- RWD seems to be a much 'simpler' design.

and you can't forget about AWD and 4WD (not the same thing)

I can't comment on RWD/FWD because every car I've owned has been FWD cars so far and the only time I've driven RWD vehicles are when I drove pick-up trucks. I couldn't really tell the difference. I'm not exactly a racer type so I'm not surprised that I couldn't tell the difference. As far as auto/manual, I've had 2 on manual and 2 on auto. I care whether it's auto or manual about as much as I care about having sesame seeds on burger buns. If it's there, fine, if not, that's fine too. I can see that it's more fun, but I remember there being more sh!t to do while driving. I just don't care man, I'm sorry. And no, you're not taking my Man Card away from me.
