A cop found me through my debit card..... how is this possible?

This past Saturday, I lost my wallet while bike riding. I had a flat tire and when I sat down at a bench I must have left it there. I usually carry it in my carry-box on my bike but when I took out my cell phone from the little carry box my wallet must have fallen out. I called my brother to pick me up and I went home. Later I realized I must have lost my wallet at the park on the trails and I went back looking for it twice but couldn't find it.

So, I call my credit card companies and had them reported lost. I was upset since my driver license and debit card where in there too.

Anyways, today my brother calls me and says an officer stopped by the house to drop off my wallet. It had my OLD address on my drivers license so he was unable to find me there. But he was able to find me via my debit card from Bank of America which was in my wallet too. How?

Oh well, I'm glad he dropped it off and thankful. Wish I was there to offer him a reward or something for his trouble. He was off-duty when he found it jogging in the park.

probably just called BofA and asked them, being a cop i'm sure they would have abliged him....and the fact he was doing a public service trying to return it to you......

Well, I would assume that he could just look up your name on the computer and find you that way.

If he did specifically use the debit card he could have gone into the branch and had them look up your address...?

Is your phone number listed?

He could've done a quick white pages search.

i believe bank information that could be found through public record (i.e. address, name etc.) is open to police without requiring a search warrant. I think it is only bank account information and private information (ss#, motehr's maiden) for which they need a warrant.

but i'm sort of unsure... <--- took the bank privacy act testing but am still unsure... i'm such a bad employee.

You're lucky he didn't ticket you for not having your DL updated. In my state, you have ten days from your change of address to get it updated, or you could pay a fine.

Unless you're a Atomic Fireball hot chick, I can't believe the cop went to all the trouble of hand delivering the goods.

Go get back on your bike and hammer!

Awwww... this makes the most sense. Yeah, I was thinking, shouldn't he need a warrant to find me from the bank account info. Oh well, really nice of him though. Saved me the hassle of having to buy another wallet. :)

Though I have to wait a week for my new debit card :(
Oh well, to the bank I go for some good old hard cash!

Well, based on my extensive knowledge of CSI, he probably swabbed the wallet for prints, set up a 50 foot barrier around the wallet. Then he noticed a small strand of hair in the sewer grate under the park bench by the wallet... only it wasn't human hair, it was New Zealand sheep wool... but this wool was only produced in a small village outside of...

He's a freakin cop. If I found your debit card, I could find you too.

i'd be pretty suprised if I found a wallet and called the CC company and asked for your phone number, and they wouldn't give it to me..now as far as address goes, that might be a different story (although he had your DL, heeh)

That's pretty thoughtful of the cop! I'd write him a letter and say thanks!

Odd. I have my parents' address on my license and I have lived there for over 7 years.

your driver's licence has a number. it is a public record. it does not change when you change your address.

This just in from the breaking news department: police officers use investigative skills and techniques to locate people.

Meh, going on six years here, lol. My DL has the address of the first house I owned, I'm three houses and 120 miloes away now.

I HAVE tried to get it changed, but the DL office is so unreliable, some days closed, some days on extended lunch, some days too busy... :/

The driver's license was outdated. The point the guy is saying is that the cop got his current address from the debit card.

I think the idea that he got your info from your debit card is a stretch.

P.S. - Update your drivers license.
