a computer that syncs with laptop??

does anyone sync their laptop with their desktop at the office in order to keep the information that was gained on the laptop the same with the desktop, and vice versa?

im looking to build a computer that does that.... and am looking for options... has anyone any experience in doing this?

what are the hardwares that i will need to buy? sync cables? do any programs out there automatically copy the files to make the sync job easy and essentially "one-touch"?
