A Computer Amatuer considers overclocking. . .

Hi, I'm getting a new PC soon and its CPU is a Celeron 2.4GHz. I heard that the way to really let the Celeron shine is to overclock it a little bit, but since this PC will be my only operating one(this one is slowly limping to its death) is it a good idea? What kind of damages can I expect if I push the FSB to 533 MHz? Will there be a signifcant gain in regular programs? I.e. running a Media player with Word Processor and IE or encoding MP3s and possibly video. I know Celerons aren't that great for games, but to be honest Homeworld 2 is most likely the only game to be on it. Thanks.

The worst case is that it will fry your celery if you upped the voltage too high. otherwise, it would not have any effect. If it is too high, it will cause the system unstable. Not sure the other parts.........
 
Don't waste your time worrying about raising the FSB. Those chips are made on the same silicon as the 3.2GHz models. The chip may run a little warmer, but that's no big deal. Just don't raise the voltage and you'll be fine.
 
If you haven't already ordered, for that price I would reccomend going AMD and the Barton 2500+, which will run rings around a Celeron. The price difference should only be around a couple dollars on Pricewatch, $12 on newegg. Unless you are set on intel, of course.

PCMark gives around 7000 for a Barton 2500+. Not sure what a Celeron gives, but it's definitely much lower.
 
Actually, I ordered it a little while ago. But thanks for the advice, the next time I buy a PC(could be 5 years sadly) I'll be sure to consult you guys first. So all I have to do is go into Bios when it boots up and set the FSB to 533? I heard that intel chips are locked so the only way to overclock them is to change the FSB.
