Im not going to school for a while untill I make up my mind so i decided i might as well get my A+ out of the way, although I have a few questions regarding it.I have this book from about 1999 that i studied back then.Is all the material in this book still what the A+ tests?Has the test been updated?I dont remember the book well but if the A+ test it preety general i feel comfortable taking it now.Does anyone know a testing center or a website that offers information where to find one?

no, the tests are different now. they are adaptive tests. comptia.org has more info.

There is an operating systems part to this test now.

Prometric - find a testing center near you.

Do a search for "A+" to find some threads that were started recently.

Thanks for all the info :) Poor old book......oh well , so would you say the test is harder now?Could i still just jump in and take it with no book study? The old test seemed to have ALOT of legacy crap.

yeah, lots of legacy crap. not to mention, when you take the real test the give you some of the WORST DIAGRAMS i have EVER seen. i took my a+ exams yesterday and i managed to fail the hardware part because the diagrams were so vague. they show you a mobo and tell you to click where the printer ports would be. trust me, i know where they are, i've been building computers since i was 13. but i got 3 questions like that and those really killed me.

use things called "braindumps". do a google search for a+ braindumps, those helped me out a lot. i also got a a+ book by exam cram. just make sure the material covers tests 220-221 and 220-222. and study hard (no matter how much of an expert you think you are), because they ask a lot of very odd questions once you get to the test.

I got mine like 2 years ago, but I am not sure if I have to renew it or not. Oh well it isn't worth a whole lot anyways. The tests are pretty damn easy, but like they said above the diagrams suck and the questions can be tricky. Just read the questions all the way through, then answer!

Got my A+, N+ and Linux cert from reading a book then taking a test. Unfortunately I have never used a single one to leverage myself in the workplace.

I can't believe you guys found the diagrams "hard". Are you kidding me? They were pretty straightforward if you ask me. I just took the hardware three weeks ago and the OS yesterday, and found them both boringly easy. The transcenders I used to practice with were ten times harder than the test itself. They'd ask things like "If johnny has a 6GB hard drive, and places a 10k text file on it, how many clusters will he be using?". I don't know about you guys, but I don't care how many sectors are in a cluster based on the partition size (and have never needed such info in a work environment). In the real test, I got asked "how many pins in a serial port?".... "point out the video card connector"....... "point out the floppy drive connector"...... "if bob forgets his win2k domain password, what should he do?". If you've been in IT for awhile.... glaze over a book, practice some braindumps or transcenders, and then take the test.

p.s. as far as legacy stuff goes, I didn't get asked a single DOS, WFW, Win3.x, WinNT 3.51, or win95 question. Maybe I was just lucky?

i guess you are lucky because i got 3 questions with a picture of what i thought was a mobo. but they flipped the diagram around and put it upside down, it was all screwy. sadly enough if you were to show me a mobo in real life i could tell you everything about all of the components on the board. the rest of the diagrams were decent, but the motherboard diagrams were crap, just plain crap.

I'm not sure this is a good exam to have. it's more of a "oh, i see" rather than "oh nice, you are good!" certification.

How much did you guys pay?

$139 per test. When you call Prometric they say thats the "non-member" price. I don't know how you become a "member" to get a discount.

Depends what type of job you're applying for. It's almost a requirement for any type of support role (LAN, desktop, or otherwise). Other than that, I agree it's nothing impressive. Personally, I don't have a degree, but plenty of experience. It's just something else to backup what my resume says anyways.

Yes, I suppose it's ok to have, but it's not something someone's going to see and expect you to be worth alot to them.

Only real places that require an A+ is (I assume) CompUSA, BestBuy, or something like that with a service center. I remember turning down a few idiots that somehow thought they were worth alot ($50,000+ a year) and demanded the pay. All I could do was laugh. Either you take $6-7 for now and maybe get an increase of 50 cents later or go away. ;) All because they got an A+. I wonder what they fill these guys with at school.
