A Career In The Automotive Industry..

Right now i'm trying to find a career path to follow.

After thinking about it the one thing i've always been interested in is cars, and the only thing i'd be happy doing is working with them. I'd like to be more than a mechanic and be more involved in the design part.
For example an ideal job for me would be designing parts to a car, i.e suspensions, engines, transmissions and so on, like in the new Audi TT they've developed a new suspension technology that has used iron filings and magnets to alter the stiffness of it, being part of the team that designed that would be ideal for me.

My main trouble at the moment is identifying what field in the automotive industry this is. Is it Automotive Engineering, or is it something else, i'm kind of looking for a job title so i can ring up a car company and say "i'd like to start a career in so and so, what kind of training do i need to be employable in this". etc etc.

Also if anyone who knows this industry could give me some pointers on how to get into this i'd be really grateful. I realise that things work differently in America to here in England but some things must be shared...

Thanks in advance..

Mechanical Engineer -

Schools that the Big 3 hire from would be your best bet. GMI now Kettering is a school that is highly recruited from but any school with a good ME program would be a good choice. Ask the career center who recurits at the schools.

While in College for ME ensure you join the SAE - Society of Automotive Engeinners. Network with that as lots of professionals from Companies come in. Also sign up to do the project cars, lots of schools focus on one or the other but some have a group of students working on each. Some include, high mileage, off-road, and more.

Brother is ME working at Daimler.

Thanks for identifying the area i'm interested in..

BUT I'm in England and i'm sure we don't have any of those programs or companies out here...

Only trouble about going to a university is that i don't have the qualifications, when i took my A-Levels (16-18 Years old) i took Human Biology, Chemistry, P.E and Psychology. To get into any engineering course you need to have A-Levels in Physics and Maths, so unless i go back to college for another 2 years university isn't an option for me. Also i have to pay my way at home now so i kind of need something to bring in money, this only leaves apprenticeships to do which i'm looking into at the moment. I just don't want to take an apprenticeship for 4 years and then find out what i have a qualification for isnt what i wanted to do at all..

Big 3 is risky right now. Ford probably isn't even hiring, and from what I've heard (at least about one location) I wouldn't want to work there. GM would be a little better, and DC maybe even a bit better. It sounds like you want to get into the R&D side. Make that known. It's very different from manufacturing.

Honda has a R&D center or two. Toyota has one, but I don't think they're hiring for it (Well, better not be. Long story.). But they are hiring heavily for manufacturing. Also Honda should be hiring pretty heavily for manufacturing soon, as they are building a large plant off I-74 in SE Indiana.

At least in the US you aren't going to get into R&D through an apprenticeship. Minimum 4-year engineering type degree.

Yea someone did tell me it was more on the R&D side of things.. I'm thinking about ringing a high up in R&D at a big company or two and talking to them about it maybe that might be a good idea. I did try before but i just got a run around at different switchboards  I might try going into their HQ's if they are anywhere near me too..

DESIGN = Mechanical Engineering!

You will never get a job without a Engineering degree in a autombile company.

You either go to Wyotech (trade school) and learn how to change spark-plugs or you become a Engineer.

I mean hey, I'd really like to work at Sea World and be a dolphin trainer but my Accounting degree is not gonna get me very far. Perhaps Marine Biology would have been a good major but I think that if I ring up Sea World and tell them of my dreams of becoming a dolphin trainer but all the training and experiecne I have is in Accounting, ya think they will hire me to be a dolphin trainer?

Yeah sure

Lazyness FTL!!!
