A career advice needed....

It is quite common that people look for other jobs while employed. I have one year of post-college experience and I'd like to look for another job.

I came across a job I want. Now, how does this exactly work? I don't want to tell my boss that I'm looking for another job but I'd have to put him down for reference....

Should I give him heads up? (Well I obviously have to sooner or later...)

The tricky part is that because I have little corporate reference, my boss is the one that holds the most weight. I'm also quite comfortable with my job but would like to accelerate my career faster.

How would you handle this?

Did you read my post?

My boss can attest to many of my achievements in my current job.

if you know your stuff, you don't need to rely on your boss as a reference. when i left my first job i put down an ex-coworker that quit before me, a friend in the same field but different company, and my wife (then GF) that works in the same field but different company.

Did you tell them they were who they were or you lied and had them disguised as your superiors?

i put who they were, except i didn't mention i was dating one of my references. the references don't have to be superiors although that would help. I think a person from the same field as you and knows you and your work will suffice.

i'm actually going to switch again into my 3rd job after graduating. this time i put my two bosses from my first job as references since i left at good terms. make no mention to you current boss until you have an offer in writing.

i have a question, if you put a friend down and say he was your boss, would the company ever find out?

im actually in the same boat, and most applications want 3 professional references. since i'm still at my current job and it's the first real job out of college, i put my manager, the engineer manager, and the CEO of the company.

however when I go to interview in person, I just let them know in person if they were going to contact any of my references first to please contact me before doing so so that I can at THAT time go tell my manager I had another potential offer and blah blah blah its too good to pass up etc, etc etc ...

if they are going to the point to check your references, chances are they want you. atleast in my field. i'm a computer science major looking for software developing jobs.

when i've told them to not contact my references before contacting me, they have had no problems with that and actually said that's the way they usually do it anyways.

on my resume i write "References available upon request".

then if they request them, i give them. for my current job i included a former co-worker who left before i did. the other 2 were prior supervisors. my point is that you can use people other than your supervisor.
