A car question from a poor guy :P

Ok I've got a 1996 Chevy Corsica with a 2.2 liter 4 cyl engine.

It has been a great used car (bought it two years ago for 1500 dollars) with few problems.

On the way back from a long trip yesterday, I noticed the following.

I was going down the interstate and noticed that it seemed like the automatic transmission was in "2" instead of drive.

So I checked my shifter, and I was indeed in drive.

I let off on the gas pedal and then it seemd to go ahead and shift into the upper gear.

I pulled onto an exit ramp to test it again.

I accelerate - all the way into the 50's and even to 60 mph and there is no 'shift' - just stays into the second gear.

When I let off the gas it will go ahead and shift.

Sigh.

Is this a terrible sign?

Something simple?

12, 000 miles ago I did a complete transmission service btw - tranny fluid and filter change.

make sure it isnt running out of ATF.

do you totally let of the gas or just ease off it before it shifts?

Sounds like it is time to have the valve body at least cleaned. You could try a fluid flush and one of theose bottles of tranny conditioner that will free up sticky valves....as that sounds like the cuplrit.

Thanks guys will look into it.
Consider getting a transmission service as soon as you can. I have one once a year just to make sure that nothing is going wrong.
