I have been to a million sites that suggest tweaks for your system if you have a cable modem. I've even checked dslreport's tweak-detector thing and it said my machine was totally tweaked. Well, it was WRONG!!!! I actually found this on a Warez bot, and downloaded it for fun.

Here's the numbers------

before i applied the tweak, i would get anywhere from 800Kbps to 1.5Mbps. Afterwards, I got anywhere from 3Mbps to 4.8Mbps!!!!!!!!

here's the tweak, it's a registry hack--

go to this key-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP]
and create a new string value called DefaultRcvWindow, and set it to 64240.

If you are not comfortable editing the registry, simply open notepad, copy the following and paste it in.
(start copying)
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP]

"DefaultRcvWindow"="64240"
(stop copying)
and save it as a file with the extension .reg
now just double click it and it will say "the registry was successfully updated" or something to that extent.

let me know how well this works for you, it worked AWESOME for me!

and no, i am not a door to door salesman!:D

EDIT: sorry, i forgot to mention that you have to reboot for it to go into effect!

Should anyone try this? I hope this doesnt result in a format. I don't have a cd rom to format my computer. Well, we'll wait and see if anyone else has any success.

i have an RCA, it's white and fairly smallish (with both an ethernet and usb port).

But i dont think it matters, cus the setting is for Windows, not the actual cable modem.

A high RWIN could be harmful to a capped connection (resulting in packetloss/retransmissions/stalls). Read all about tweaking broadband connections here. My AT&T RR's cable, capped at 1.5Mbps likes an RWIN of about 32K best.

And GG on the extra 2-4Mbps dood :)

No difference for me. Maybe because I am running Win2k.

Both WinME and Win2k have improved TCP/IP stacks, over Win98.

Dude, this is nothing new. Changing the RWIN has been the primary tweak since people started tweaking net connections. Most of those tweaks youve tried have probably done the exact same thing.

Macro, there is no real way to uncap UL or DL speeds. These are capped at the head end (the service provider).

Thats not really true, I was running Win2k for the longest time and when I got cable, I was only getting DL's of 60-100K/s. I changed the RWIN size (actually, my server and client didnt have any default RWIN size, I had to add it in manually) and BAM, now getting 250K/s consistently (well unless I'm DL'ing from a slow site...). Anywho, I'd look into it a bit more, maybe it was with the way I installed win2k so thats why it didnt have a RWIN entry, your may already have it, I dont know... just stating my experience. Sure, win2k/ME have a rewritten tcp/ip stack, but RWIN size doesn't have anything to do w/ that :p... thats just a reg setting...

Is there some kind of test (webpage or program) to help you test if this tweak made a difference or not?

This tweak is used by every know internet tweak utility I have ever seen or used. Receive Window is the most common tweak there is.
