I have two indoor pets. A cat and a small Welsh Corgie dog.

I am also moving into a new home (brand new model home). In the home I am in, it was built in 1986 and has a simple AC unit with changeable 16x20x1 filters. With my allergies....it's not enough. It probably doesn't help that the whole house is carpet (crappy carpet that I know is the problem).

I come home now to this house and within 10 minutes I get sinus pressure and stoppage....and the house stays clean (we vacuum 3 times a week) with a HEPA filtered vacuum cleaner.

I do not want this in the new house. Luckily in the new home, 75% of the house is slate tile with carpet in the bedrooms.

It has a great AC system, but I know filter media is everything when trying to capture allergens. What filter media do you guys suggest?

A guy I work with spent $1600 on an Accuclean system - http://www.americanstandardair...Updates/AccuClean.aspx - but I can't justify spending this much on that.....but can if I need to.

I don't mind spending $20-30 on filter media that just needs to be changed....right now I buy the 3M crap from Wal-Mart for $6 each or so.....

Zyrtec can only do so much for me.....I need your help!

Still fighting this battle. In the flophouse where I live 4 of the 5 folks living there smoke heavily. Also have 2 longhair cats. Have a crappy one on the outside air return, and a really good "make your own" allergen filter on the air handler itself. The second filter really helps.

3M Filtrete says it catches smaller particles and allergens. Maybe that will help over the ones you're using now?

We use a washable filter for the HVAC air return.
I have those 3M register filters on the duct register. I change those every few weeks.
I don't wake up as congested anymore.

I am really not sure....

3 years ago nothing bothered me.....but now I live in the city (Dallas). Could be a shitload of things I guess...

$16 @ target :D Not much better, but they say they'll go for 3 months. Personally, I'd rather get the cheapies and replace them monthly, but I've never had problems with allergies, so it might be worth a shot for the OP.

Yes the pollen/strict filters do catch more stuff but they also reduce the performnace of your AC/Heat system.

Its like a K&N filter. The better it flows the more it lets in. The more it stops the less air can also get in.

The best all round I have found is to use the cheapest pleated filter. It stops more then the basic fiberglass ones but does not reduce the airflow as badly as the "super stops everything" filters.
