A bunch of kids cover Tool's "46 and 2" (among other songs) and it's awesome

A guy that does one on one music lessons for kids (I believe that's how it goes) allows them to get together to play in bands (generally playing hard rock or metal music). He allows the best of them to perform on his Youtube videos. All the kids in these two videos are between ~10 and 16.

Cover of Tool's "46 and 2":

Another one worth checking out is a kids cover of "Cowboys from Hell" by Pantera (really awesome guitar solo in this one).

don't know why search isn't finding "tool" but here's the original thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2344374

I'm assuming the lack of interest in that thread had something to do with no mention of it being a kid's cover in either the title or the first post, that's why I created a new one.

Edit: Kids playing metal (and doing it exceptionally well) is more interesting than "just another cover of a popular song that only a few people might like".

despite the rhythms, tool's is some of the easiest music to play ever written. the only "kid" who needs to make any effort, the drummer, is 15 or so. my friend from berklee has been drumming since six, so ... lol.

Great stuff.

I'd be happy if I could just get my kids to listen to and appreciate Dream Theater..

I did and failed miserably. I can't even count half their songs - what the fuck time signature is Jambi in? I should ask some pre-schoolers for assistance.

I thought this was pretty cool. People haven't posted on this yet, as far as I can tell, so here I go, in case you were wondering about how complex this song actually is.

Obvious first, the song is written in 9, let's call it 9/8, except for Adams solo (6/4, respective to 9/8), and the "Shine down benevolent song" section (9/4, respectively). Pretty blatant, right?

Next step, the sub-divisions and polyrhythm: the beginning (keep in mind it's in 9) is in 3+2+2+2, all of the band with this rhythm. after this the guitar goes into a 2+2+2+3 groove, and the drums comes in w/ 3+3+3, then maynard comes in with 3+2+2+2. The bass comes in with the 3+3+3, except each three section is divided into two instead of three. This creates an 8th note over triplet feel with the adam and maynard. They all go together like this. As the song progresses, danny and maynard switch back and forth among all of this subdivision combination.
Also, the 9/4 part is subdivided into 5+4.

Polyrhythm:
After the 9/4 part, adam comes back in with the 2+2+2+3, danny w/ 3+3+3, Justin w/ the eighth notes over danny's triplets, and finally maynard's "breath in union" comes in with 3+2+2+2. This all happens simultaneously, and they line every nine beats. All parts of the band eventually conform to maynards rhythm. funny how the band's polyrhythm's COME INTO UNION at this point and the lyrics are "BREATHE IN UNION".

Oh stfu. Being good at air drums doesn't count, fool.

That little drummer boy was pretty bad ass. However, I have a friend from berklee who's been drumming since conception, so... meh.

The drummer is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. And the rest aren't far down in the talent line. I'm so damned impressed.

Did you guys watch the Pantera cover, "Cowboys from Hell"? The guitarist (I think he's 16) is pretty badass in that one. Supposedly altered Dimebag's solo (but could play Dimebag's note for note) to his liking.

Everyone great, but the drummer is just that good. He could easily write his own ticket as a studio pro.

And yeah, I watched their Arpeggios from Hell by Yngwie Malmsteen and was thoroughly impressed by the guitarist.

I'm pretty sure it's a different drummer in the Cowboys from Hell video, but this one is pretty good too (I'm not a drummer expert).
