My SCSI toshiba CD-ROM broke down on me and I was going to get another one but I figured I might go w/ a DVD drive.

My main usage wouldn't be to watch movies but rather ripping data off of CDRs. Would I need a dual laser one or do all DVD drives read CDRs. I'm probably going to go IDE since I lent my SCSI card to my friend. If it's going to be too expensive I'm just going to buy a cheap cd-rom drive.

most of the recent ones do.
since you want to be doing alot of ripping then you'll need a dvd with good DAE. I expect that you'll also want to copy on the fly vs imaging to hdd before the burn so my suggestion is the Pioneer x16 dvd!
