Tons of cops everywhere near the site... They were probably doing training or something.

Hope nobody is hurt badly.

EDIT: 1 dead and 4 injured... RIP for the soldier who died and thoughts and prayers for the injured + families.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Five people were injured when an Army Blackhawk helicopter on a field training exercise crashed Monday into a field on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The helicopter crashed near the Corps of Cadets field on the school's College Station campus, about 100 miles northwest of Houston. A crew of four and an Army lieutenant assigned to the school's ROTC unit were aboard the Blackhawk, Texas A&M spokesman Lane Stephenson said.

The five injured were taken to local hospitals, Stephenson said. No students were among the injured.

Witnesses told the Bryan-College Station Eagle they saw five Blackhawk helicopters taking off and landing throughout the day.

Scott Walker told the newspaper that he saw two helicopters lift off around 3:05 p.m. The first one took off without trouble, but the second seemed to lose control and start spinning, Walker said.

"All of a sudden he dropped straight back down into the ground," Walker told the newspaper.

Blame the Lieutenant!

Likely mechanical failure, stuff happens, but evidently the pilot did all he could in a bad situation. Very sad, but in MHO, there is no political blame anywhere or lessons to be really learned.

All our hearts should go to those killed or injured. Maybe we will learn more later to alter my initial guess, but for now, it looks like just a sad accident effecting fine young Americans, the only real people we have in this thread. There by the grace of God go you and I.

Started spinning right after takeoff? Yup, sounds like mechanical failure, and the sort of failure that's very hard to recover from.

Helicopters are pretty cool, but they have a lot of complex parts which all have to work perfectly, all of the time...
