A Bit rusty on PC Hardware - DDR or DDR2?

Everyone,

I am about to build a new PC for my video Editting hobby. I am thinking about AMD 64 Dual Core. I cam accross a Sapphire Mobo (PC-a9RD480ADC) that I like. Now, I am a bit rusty on PC hardware. I understand there is DDR RAM and there is DDR2. I want to know if DDR Dual Channel PC3200 is same as DDR2 PC3200. Also, does this mobo support DDR or DDR2? For my video editting, I think having good/fast RAM is important.

*** One more thing, do you guys think the following config any good?
*** Sapphite PC-A9RD480Adv Socket 939 Ati Radeon Xpress Crossfire Mobo
*** Sapphire 100130VIVO Radeon X800GTO2 256MB GDDR3 PCI Xpress x16 Video
*** AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 1GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Proc ADA3800BVBOX
*** Some type of 2GB RAM (After I figure out what I need)

Thank you.

The A64 does not support DDR2 RAM yet, not until AM2 is released. It doesn't matter though thanks to the on-die controller and the low latencies of DDR ram. So you really have no choice. They are not pin compatible (184 pin for DDR, 240 for DDR2) so it is physically impossible to use DDR2 memory.

Thats about it. And some type of 2gb RAM is best. Something thats 2x1gb that operates in Dual Channel is best IMO.

You'll need plain ol' PC3200 DDR RAM. Be sure to get two 1GB sticks for dual channel. Don't cheap out and get 4x512MB as you'll have to run less aggressive memory timings which would hurt performance a bit.

Thank you both of you for you replies.

So, in your opinion, should I just use this Mobo with 2x1G DDR ram or shall I go for a different mobo that takes DDR2? If it is the later, any recommendations?

Also, what do you think of the rest of the components?

Thanks.

Read my first reply. You can't get a DDR2 mobo with an A64 because the processor doesn't support it. That's not a problem though thanks to the on-die memory controller and the fast timings of DDR memeory.

Just get some standard PC3200 DDR400 ram.

Sorry. I didn't know what A64 meant and what you meant by AM2. I thought these were some technologies in that particular mobo from that manufacturer.
