<Anand> What about support for Conroe? What ASUS motherboards in Q1 next year will support Intel's next-generation microprocessors?
<ASUS_RD> We have not received Conroe CPU sample yet, I am not sure what chipset can support it or not, Try out best...

<Anand> hmm, maybe we should loan you one? ;)
<ASUS_RD> At least Broadwater could support it!!

<Anand> As we talk about next-generation microprocessors, can you give us an update on AMD's Socket M2
<ASUS_RD> Please....we would love to...

<Anand> How far along is ASUS on the development of Socket M2 motherboards? Has AMD provided you with CPUs yet?
<ASUS_RD> We already have some project on going now, sure we have M2 sample now.

<Anand> How is the sample looking and running, can you tell us what clock speed it is running at?
<ASUS_RD> We get some sample with 2400~2600MHz CPU sample now, maybe have 2800 CPU, I have to check internally after guys in office.

<Anand> What DDR2 speeds are supported on those samples?
<ASUS_RD> AMD's suggestion is DDR2-667 now,

<Anand> and those M2 samples are still pin based and not LGA style processors, correct?
<ASUS_RD> Yes, 940 pin but not same with Opteron 940.

<Anand> That's what we've been hearing as well
<ASUS_RD> It looks not more special than original 939 CPU.

<Anand> from a performance standpoint or just physically looks identical to the current CPUs?
<ASUS_RD> We have no comparison data yet on performance.

<Anand> Well thanks for the update on AMD's Socket M2.

The only bit of information that you can really extract, is that it looks like M2 skt 940 will be pin based not LGA. Apart from that its stuff we already knew.

still cool to here it from Anand and ASUS though.

sounds intresting i thought it was going to be LGA and i actually thought that would be a good idea. DDR2-677 i just did a search on newegg its pretty expensive and i really wonder what the benchies are going to be like if it doent give me a real performance gain i am keeping my socket 939 board. its like socket 754 and 939 there really wasnt a big performance increase all it really had was pci-e.

Is there a full q and A??? I didn't know where to go to see the live chat...

Edit: can you post the full transcript?

yeah it was up in general hardware .. i asked the fatal question to Anand what his thoughts were on the overclock-ability of the new M2's, due to the high HTT being used. his response was he thought it would be around the same as what we have now, although i will only believe this once it is released and tested, as i have my doubts.

Also Anand stated that the only benefit of using DDR2 667 is that of the extra bandwidth supplied to both cores, as if we did not already know this. I still think it is a buffer an test period for 65nm.

sounds intresting i thought it was going to be LGA and i actually thought that would be a good idea.

yeah we have seen the pictures of socket F (1207 pins) which is going to be for the server platform and is on a LGA form factor, however looks like the M2 940 pin is going to look pretty much the same as the current s939.

Apparently 10% of socket M2 pins are not going to be utilised, and it is a larger percentage with current s939 CPU?s, hence when people broke pins off, upto 7 for instance it still worked depending on whether it wasn?t an actual I/O pin.

Unfortunately i closed the IRC window. There was a lot of talk about the new ASUS boards and also talk about the heatpipes they are using on the new ASUS A8N32 or whatever it is called.

I don?t think a lot of information was divulged in this session as I caught the last bits, however they have scheduled a session with Intel in the coming days (Check general hardware for dates).. This should be very interesting. I foresee high emphasis on the new 65nm P4's, and future 65nm products for that matter, not to mention Conroe Meriom, on die DDR2 mem controllers etc, there are so many questions to be asked .. don?t miss out, I know I wont :D

EDIT: i believe one will be posted soon by Kristopher Kubicki
