A bit of help with a new system

Hi all.
This is my current system:

QDI Legend9
PentiumIII650@866mhz
256mb RAM
GeForce2 MX 400
HD Quantum Fireball 40gb
HD Samsung 15 gb
Monitor Compaq FS740 19"

I need a new PC, as you can see.
I have a budget of $400-450.
What is the best upgrade I could get? After upgrading I plan to save $50 each month for upgrading my new system.
I'm mainly undecided on which type of CPU and socket to get.
Is it better to buy a socket 754 or a 939?
I'd go for the 939, but then if I want to mantain the same motherboard for a good time I need a PCIe or a SLI motherboard (and the price goes up). Furthermore, I'll have to change the video card too..

However if I buy a 754 motherboard, I'll probably have to change it in the near future.

Should I go for a Socket-A system and save the $50 each month for the future?

Keep in mind that I mainly use my PC for Office, Internet and occasional gaming. I'm not a gamer, but I like to play when I have a bit of free time.
Also keep in mind that I'm from Italy, so if you'll suggest me an internet shop be sure that they ship here. It wouldn't be a problem having a price a bit higher, the ?/$ exchange is really good now, I may end up saving money even spending a little more dollars than average 🙂

Thank you all

You change systems because of performance not because of socket type.

this is very do-able, u can have a socket 939, and 1gb of ram with this budget, as long as u keep ur case/monitor/HDD's/etc.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=13-128-274&depa=0 [/L]

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=19-103-501&depa=0 [/L]

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/app/view...tion=20-145-440&DEPA=0 [/L]

Graphics Card: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...tion=14-131-219&depa=0
this brings the price to $503, and newegg might not ship to italy and doesnt have the cheapest prices, but this gives u an idea of what u should get.

dude chill out, he was just giving gorion an opposing opinion to what i had posted in case gorion is on a strict $450 budget and wants to buy tommorow

Plus he had a budget of $450.00

Thanks both for your answers.

I don't have any problem with keeping my HDD. However, I'd just like to know if my PS could work with this configuration.(I suppose that I have a cheap PS for a PIII 🙁)

I have doubts about the 754 socket because AMD hasn't any plan to make new CPUs for this socket. I'm afraid that in the near future I'll have to change my motherboard again if I want to upgrade my CPU.

Do you know a good online shop which ships to Italy?
Thanks again.

I have all the confidence in the world when it comes time for you to upgrade it won't matter if you have a socket 939 or 754.

This might be true, but I intend to upgrade more frequently in the future. Possibly a component every 2-3 months. could this change things?

Dual core will never see socket 754. That should make all the difference in the world for a future-resistant standpoint. Of course the chipset must support it too. any nForce based socket 939 board should do
