i have these new parts on their way and was wondering if i could get a bit of help, more a conformation that i am setting it up correctly when the parts arrive.
getting a

Asus A7V8X motherboard
512 meg stick of Samsung DDR 400 memory
Antec true power 380P psu
Maxtor Diamond Max 60 gig 7200 rpm HD

ill be putting in my AMD 1800 cpu
all i want is "stock" settings till later on.(to verify stability)

like what should fsb/multiplier/core voltage/memory timings, etc be set at?
i may figure it out myself when i get the MB manual ok but as these setting can do so much harm if not correct.......well you know, a bit of conformation can go a long way.Im fine with building a computer, done it before, but on older systems, a little leary of all the newer bios settings on these new M boards. thanks

The xp 1800 runs at 1533 fsb. The default multiplier setting is 11.5, and the fsb is 133. The voltage depends on the cpu type. Paliminos run at 1.75 volts (mobo will detect this), while thoroughbreds run at 1.65 (on average). Some may run lower. Memory timings depend on the quality of your memory. For start up, I would try the default settings, and decide if you want to overclock. I haven't tried an unlocked xp for awhile, but most will run at 145 fsb for a modest overclock. Nforce2 mobos may run some fine at 166 fsb. I wouldn't raise the default cpu voltage setting without a better heatsink, such as swiftech or thermalright copper cores.

Thanks for the reply, not being used to newer motherboards, i didnt know how much they auto set the defaults, so looks like it's easy enough to set up that way.Of course a full read and understanding of the manual will be done as i go as well, this stuff just costs to much to blindly install and hit the power button.

Yeah i have been looking at a Thermalright SK7 all copper cooler, any thoughts on it?
All this will be in a full tower case, with a 80mm intake and a 80 mm exaust fan,if that doesnt seem to be enough, i have room for another intake and exaust as well. And too, the room its in isnt overly hot either. In this same computer case i ran the 1800 at about 50C with stock cooling and one intake and one exaust fan. Im not going way out on overclocking anyway, a little if stability is still good, hard enough getting windows to run stable without adding to the problem !
