A Bismarck to join the German parliament

28 February 2005

LUEBECK - The German parliament is due to gain a deputy with one of the most prominent historical names in Germany when Carl-Eduard Graf von Bismarck takes a seat for the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

Carl-Eduard, 43, is a great-great grandson of Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), who as the "Iron Chancellor" was the driving force in the creation of the modern German state.

The Luebecker Nachrichten newspaper said Carl-Eduard was to take the seat in the German parliament of Peter Harry Carstensen, who led the CDU in the 27 February elections in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Dude, Bismark predated the Nazis. He predated WW1, fer cryin' out loud.

Hmm, maybe Bismark's gonna unite Europe the way his ancestor did Prussia/Bavaria.
Probably not, but neat thought.

just the modern German state paved the way into WW1, which as a result of European backlash against Germany led to WW2

Are Christian Democrats really Christians, or is that just an old name that hasn't gone away? I know very little about European political parties.

Hmm. . . well, Defenestration of Prague led to the 30 years war, the birth of the modern Nation-State after the treaty of Westphaila led to the centralization of power in the hands of the French monarch, as well as the beginning of a German identity in the former Holy Roman Empire.

That concentration of executive power in France led directly to the Revolution, which led to the Napoleonic wars, which contributed to the acknowledgement of Prussia as a military power, which led to the unification of the German state, the ascension of Bismarck, and tensions between France and Germany regarding Alsace-Lorraine.

But you don't see me saying "Sieg Heil" everytime I see someone thrown through a window in an action flick.

IIRC they are just conservative. I think they are roughly like our republicans. Religous allignment, but not much else as far as that goes.

i hope so, i mean great cities such as Konigsberg that once belonged to Germany were taken away. I don't think people realize the atrocities committed by the Russian soldiers on Germany's eastern fromt during ww2. Entire families were killed and thousands of women raped. The Russians showed zero remorse. Of course the same could be said of Hitler and the sixth army and the other divisions that were sent on Operation Barbarossa, but that doesn't excuse the Russians. cities such as Konigsberg and Danzig and many others were not spared by the Russians, who literally destroyed them. Germany cannot allow Russia to still have the city, now called Kaliningrad. It used to be part of Germany's Eastern Prussia. That is a major historical city to Germany.

Germany needs Konigsberg and greater Prussia back.
