I installed Vanilla Debian, managed to get the packages updated to Sarge, reconfigured the messed up grub bootloader so my Windows install would come back, figured out how to change the apt sources to unstable to get the msttcorefonts (nice fonts), installed the font server thing, got it running, altered the X11 file thing to reflect the font, and now in front of me I have a shiny nice looking, fast Debian system based on the 2.6.5 kernel!

All of this is a culmination of trying and understanding various linux installs before finally trying to tackle the best :)

I've used:
Suse 8.2
Suse 9.0
Slack 9.1
Red Hat 9
Fedora 1, 2
Mepis
Cobind Linux
Mandrake 8.2, 9, 10
Arch Linux
Peanut Linux
Vector Linux
Libranet

- and finally decided I'd tackle what ppl call the most difficult one ! - Debian. . . .

I'd never configured anything manually. . .

Also, IMHO, vi sucks, joe rocks. . ..

And now you can... do the exact same thing you did before spending all that time configuring things.

Congrats with that one buyer262000..

Now SampSon, I just got rid of FreeBSD, which at the time I liked, but when it fubar's my hdd, and a friends... something is up there. Then there were some incompatibilities I was pissed off with, so I tried Gentoo Stage1. Fun stuff, right MCrusty? :) Anyway, it took like 2 days on my 133mhz Pentium, but it's well worth it.

Anyway, hope you had fun with Debian ;)

I may stick with this one. It is much faster than all those RPM distros. I tried Libranet 2.7 (free) and it is a debian derivative, but it kept breaking. . .

This one so far seems sleek and stable. I like this thing in KDE 3.22 that autocorrects your spelling no matter where you type. . .

Woot. . .

Just gotta remember how to change resolutions without a gui app ...

"Also, IMHO, vi sucks, joe rocks. . .. "

From the little I've done in Linux, I have to agree with that.

I haven't used joe, I am particularly keen of nano though, I hate vi with a passion.

I started using Debian in about '96 I believe, and it remains my favorite for personal use. Then again, my needs for Linux are for development, not as a desktop OS.

Actually, good for you! I've had trouble with Mandrake and Red Hat so I am a total dweeb and cannot consider myself a geek at all. You sir, are a major geek! Congratulations!!!
