I've noticed that Windows XP (and all other NT based Windows versions) don't come with anything nearly as good as Win 9x's Scandisk. I was wondering if there is something like Win 9x's Scandisk that will work on XP? I really need one right now as I have a bad HD and I want a better idea of what's wrong with it.

if you suspect a bad drive, I'd download diagnostic utility from the manufacturer of your harddrive....Maxtor, IBM and Seagate all have some sort of a disk utility that does just that....worth checking out.

Although I don't know if Norton's utilities are as good as the Scandisk in Windows 98, I know for sure that Systemworks 2002 (and Disk Doctor and Speed Disk) do work in XP. Hope this helps.

I've already used IBM's diagnostics but I was hoping some program could tell me what files (if any) are being damaged by the bad sectors. I ordered Norton Systemworks 2002 from Newegg. Will it be able to tell me what files were damaged? I really need to know exactly what files were affected as I have backups of most of them and I can't (easily) just restore the whole hard disk.

I can't believe Norton Disk Doctor can't do a full bad sector scan! I ended up using chkdsk. It found either 4 or 14 bad sectors. :( Someone needs to design a laptop with a RESET button.

The whole problem is I have to turn it off. I can do that by just holding the power button for 5 seconds. The laptop really needs a reset button.
