I saw an earlier thread where people were discussing the A+ and said to go for something more challenging. So is the A+ just a joke? Does no one really take it serious? Or is it actually worth getting?

I wouldn't look for a six-figure salary with only that on a resume, but I think it has some merit. It's a good starting point.

You would want A+ as a starting point. Then go with all the CompTIA exams. From what I've seen they aren't that difficult. I would strongly suggest a more prominent certification if you want to pursue IT career. Cisco is what I'm currently working on. It's relatively easy IMO. I'm not sure if I would go for MCSE. I know that alot of people look at it as the "standard" but I'm kind of against it. Basically the more certs you rack up the more you'll get, or at least the more offers you will probably get. The biggest hurdle is to get your foot in the door. Looking for the 6 fig salary right away. That's not gonna happen. Maybe 5-6 years working your but off and climbing the ranks will get you there.

It all depends what exactly you're looking for. A+ gives you a good overview of past technologies and how to fix things if you want to be a PC tech. Its a good starting point. It'll give you the basics and kinda teach you troubleshooting techniques.

Network+ just came out recently so that should be fairly easy. Decent background for networking. Then maybe move on to CCNA.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to start studying for the A+ exam? I'm thinking of taking it soon. Should I just get a book somehow and read it?

Don't think that certs alone will get you a six figure job. Certs are a good STARTING POINT (of course, very high level certs are exempt from all this) but to get an excellent IT job you need:

Persistence
Experience
People Skills
Motivation
Knowledge <-- real knowledge, not knowledge that will get you past the MCSE

Yes real knowledge.

Not mr The Answer Group (TAG) supervisor who got his mcse and mct and became a teacher, including a+ teacher, trying to rip a slot 1 p2 out of a slot, and watching his student (who proved him wrong a few times) carefully push the clips in.

It was pretty funny. :)

A+ / all comptia is pretty easy. MCSE is a bitch because they do their best to trick you. Cisco is very straightforward but it does get tedious.. that's what I know so far. I will keep you guys updated.
