A 450 Watts PSU, is it enough ?

Hi,

I'd like to know if a 450 Watts PSU (from Antec) would be enough for a 6800 Ultra. Is it ? Let's say any brand of that specific GPU. I don't have one in mind right now.

And that's considering I'm using two Hard-Disk Drives, and two media Drives (CD-RW and DVD-RW). Currently, all that works like a charm, with a 9800 Pro 128 MB (it requires a second power plug).

I recently upgraded my CPU / Motherboard combo. But due to some reasons I had to get the AGP model of the Motherboard (ASUS A8V Deluxe). I wanted to get the PCI-Express version (ASUS A8V-E Deluxe), to get a PCI-Express GPU right away, of course. But that didn't happen like I expected.

But it's alright. I'll stick with AGP for one year or so again. And next time I'll get PCI-Express.

So, meanwhile, I was looking for...well, simply the best AGP GPU I can get.

I was looking for nVidia, because of the Pixel Shader 3.0 support (who knows which up-coming game is going to fully use it).

And I was also looking for ATi, since my current and previous GPU have been from them. The only nVidia-related product I owned was a PCI XFX GeForce MX-440 SE 64 MB. And yes I still do nightmares about that one.

But...anyways...to make the long story short...back to the main question. Is it enough for a 6800 Ultra ?

Thanks for your time.

It better be! It would really be ridiculous if 450 W wasn't enough.

(and yes I have a 550 W PSU, but it was free).

Yes. I used to have a 6800gt instead of my x800xl, and I ran it on a 20pin Antec330w TruePower PS with 17a on the 12v rail. So yeah, your 450 should work.

Thanks for the replies guys...but I think I missed a few things.

My PSU is technically enough, but, I would need a converter, to make it so the extra plug with the 6800 Ultra fits in one of my extra PSU plug ? Right ? Or is it something else ?

It should just take a standard molex connector. If it needs something special it will come with an adapter.

If it's an AGP version it should just use a regular molex or two.

What brand did you get? You can look it up on newegg and look at the pictures for what's included.

Oh ok.

I did not buy the 6800 Ultra. I'm still looking for a good brand.

It's the first time I'm going to buy a product by nVidia since my MX-440 SE, and that was nearly three years ago, or a bit more. It was an XFX, but that GPU gave me nightmares. Well of course it was a Sucky Edition, and PCI, too, so there was two good reasons for it to suck. And the brand didn't help I'm sure.

So...I'm going to avoid XFX today as well.

The nVidia brands I've heard about are Leadtek, XFX (to avoid at all costs), BFG and Gigabyte (I think).

Is there any others to consider ?

Thanks.

There's a good thread here from yesterday I think about Leadtek vs. BFG vs. others.

BFG has great warranties and eVGA is pretty good if you want to save some money. Look for the thread that was on this and you'll find some more opinions.

EDIT: bingo

Whoa nice calculator ! Thanks a lot for that !

It seems I wouldn't need more than 350 Watts (or 380 Watts, over, just to be sure). So, indeed, my 450 Watts is well enough.

As for the brand, I'm going to try to get a Leadtek. If I can't find one for "x" reason(s), I'll get a BFG.

Well, thanks guys. This thread shouldn't resume. All questions answered (=oD

Thanks again to all. Have a nice day.

Just a note if you're looking at AGP cards. I think the cheapest 6800U is the eVGA for ~$400 at NewEgg. Problem is, AFAIK the stock HSF is noisy. You might consider the $350 ATI AIW X800XL or the $280 Sapphire X800P VIVO (is this as easily moddable to a full XT as the initial VIVOs?) for better price/performance and probably quieter cooling. 6800U will obviously last longer, though I'd lean toward the X800P/XL now with an eye toward upgrading to R520/G70 earlier.

Those are US prices, though. Which would make my post useless in Australia/Britain, if that "mate" is a clue.

Edit: Whoops, that $280 X800P VIVO is PCIe. That $350 AIW X800XL AGP deal is over (up to $420 now, I think), but you should be able to find regular XLs for $300-350. All prices from NewEgg.

I live in Canada, so I'm looking for Canadian dollars. But I know a very accurate currency converter. It's here: http://www.xe.com/ucc/

As for the ATi X800 XL...it's the one I wanted ! Because, like I said in my first post, I got the A8V Deluxe, instead of the A8V-E version.

So I'm stuck with AGP for at least one year again. But that's alright anyway. It's not like AGP is "obsolete". It's even far from that. But I "wanted" a PCI-Express Motherboard, as an investment. So I wouldn't have had to get a new Motherboard later.

The thing is...ATi X800 XL exists only as PCI-Express, right ?

Man...if there's an AGP version somewhere, I sure would consider it !
