A 2 week, Cross Country Road Trip

About 4 years ago I made this post.

Obviously you guys were not the most helpful bunch. 4 years later I'm going on a 2nd trip, this time through the southern states. I am hoping that the ATOT community has more to offer now.

We are gunning for a July 4th, 2006 departure. So, I ask: where do we go, what do we do?

We're starting from NJ and heading down, not sure where exactly as my familiarity with southern landmarks is sketchy. We ultimatley intend on ending the trip in Texas at the Alamo.

Just to note, we don't have time to go too far south (ie, Miami, etc). Any big landmarks or national parks we can't overlook?

Go to the left coast. Lots to see there.
The right one usually has bodies floating in the Hudson.

What sort of things are you interested in seeing and doing? Historical stuff, national parks, hiking, beaches, touristy places, off-the-beaten path, what?

For parks definitely The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Gatlinburg would be interesting. Ride a bike on the Cades Cove Loop in the park.
