This is insane. I've been looking at some ads and a decent 1BR costs in the upwards of 160-170k. In most places you can buy a small house of that price. I live in western CT, btw.

This is the market's way of telling you to move. Actually, scratch that. I don't want my housing costs going up.

They say that higher income makes up for that, but I kinda doubt it. I'll have to be making 2 times more than a software engineer in Nebraska does. I kinda doubt that.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming
2BR Condo 550,000.

My stepdad works in Jackson but we can't afford to live there. We had to move 2 hours away for decent housing.

Hartford is way cheaper. When you think about where i live think Danbury, Bethel, Ridgefield.

Western CT is extremely expensive, especially Southwestern Connecticut.

The median price of houses in Ca has gone up 18% so far just this year. Insane. How are people going to ever own a home?

I live in Houston and we have some of the most affordable housing in the country. $170,000 could get you a nice large home in a really good area here.

I can't believe the prices some people pay in other parts of the country.

and somehow some economists think that price parity exists internationally. it doesn't even exist within the borders of a country!

A one bedroom condo in my part of CT (Hartford area, to the east) go for about $95,000 - $115,000, depending if you get a garage. I had the opportunity to buy a one bedroom condo w/ garage in my complex in 1999 for $71,000, but at that time I thought that was overpriced for a one bedroom. Since then, that same condo has sold three times, for $85,000, $97,000, and $107,000. Yup, I'm kicking myself in the ass as we speak.

I guess Stamford, Darien, Norwalk is no cheaper?

I'm in Suffolk County, NY and prices aren't quite that high yet - but they are getting there.
If I had a great deal of disposable income I would snatch one of the Condos around here in a heartbeat.

Medina, OH: $170,00 = 2500sq.ft. home on 1-2 acres.

Wow! That would buy, get this, a two bedroom condo in a decent, safe neighborhood (not a "nice" status neighborhood) in Minneapolis. A 1 BR condo in a "status" neighborhood in Minneapolis can run well into the 200s. Ugh!
