I was expecting the IRS to refund me $531.14 from last years tax return. I went to the mailbox yesterday and there was an envelope from my favorite uncle ;)
It wasn't a check, but a letter stating that I had filled in some information incorrectly. They had recalculated my return and billed me for $68.86 in principal payment due and another $.40 tagged on for interest.

I checked their figures against what I had and they were right
As usual I waited until the last week to file my return and as usual I was tired when I did my calculations. I guess all-in-all they were pretty cool about it and just sent me a bill instead of their agents to rough me up. Well, after all it was only a $461.88 mistake

File early (at least calculate early) and be "fresh" :D

It sure didn't make the first day of my vacation, working on my septic tank, go any better ;)

Blain, if they BILLED you for $68.86, wouldn't that mean it was a $600 mistake? Sorry, but I guess I'm confused here. Regardless, at least they didn't decide to audit you.

I don't do my own taxes, anyway. I'd rather pay to have it done. Call me lazy, whatever..........

rgwalt,
I guess I should revise my title to "DON'T do your income taxes or post here, when you're tired"
You're almost right about the $600 mistake. With the extra 40 cents, that takes the mistake up to $600.40.

I hope I can put this all behind me today and get back to working on my septic tank ;)

Tax crap. I'm use to always getting $50~100 back, but sh*t, this year.. they took away $600 from me. Didn't even make that much.

I'm suffering from "3rd-shift-brain". It's a common malady experienced by those working after the sun goes down.
We can hardly add 2 + 2, but ask us what the OC'd speed of a 1.8a Northwood would be running a 156MHz FSB and we have no problems with that ;)

Don't come down on me too hard. This is the first blunder on my taxes in 23 years. :p

BTW Kenji4861,
Don't think of it as them taking $600 from you. Think of it as them making you an interest free loan for $600.

They recalculated my sister's return, she ended up with an extra $250 back ontop of her return.

I used to have the problem of not being able to do math really early in the morning. Then I stopped sleeping when I got to graduate school, and now it is all math, all the time.

Anyway, WTG for figuring out the tax laws over the last 23 years. That is very impressive, and warrents a PhD in applied mathematics IMHO.

$600. Sounds like you tried to get your tax rebate check and a tax cut. Sorry, it was one or the other - and I know a lot of people that were fooled by the media thinking that Bush had a tax cut AND a tax rebate. The IRS is keeping an eagle eye on that number for that very reason.

Or was it just a coincidence that your $600 mistake matches the tax rebate $600?

It was just coincidence that the total of the mistake was $600. I originally calculated my refund as being $543.14.

I WILL be reading tax software reviews from now on! Any suggestions? :D
