I'm in the market for a countertop microwave.
I just need a simple model that's quiet (quiet operation and quiet bell/buzzer).

Got any recommendations on quiet brands or models?

Thanks ;)

Mr. Blain,

It has come to our attention that you are planning to install a small microwave in your cubicile. Company policy strictly forbids this as it is considered a fire hazard.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Many microwaves have a feature that allows you to select which of several sounds or tunes they play as an alert tone. Some of those include the option to use no sound at all. However, that setting is not default, so if there's a power failure it may reset itself to some sound and need to be adjusted again.

For normal operation the major sound is the cooling fan for the magnetron tube, and I don't know of any that can avoid using a fan. So silent is highly unlikely. Your only choice there is to try to find one that is quieter that others. Don't know if the makers spec the sound level in their info. MAYBE you'd find a quieter one among those that are smaller with a lower power output (and hence requiring less fan cooling), but a lot of those are also made cheaply with little attention to niceties like sound levels.

I'm curious as to why quiet operation is such a concern, microwaves aren't all that loud to begin with.

* It's for my home.
* The Beanzawave is way too small.
* I don't think there are any "slient" microwaves. I'm looking for one that's quieter than most.
* Some models are quiet, some are relatively loud. I'm looking for one of the quieter models.
Some people like Toyota while others prefer Chevy...
I'm someone that prefers a quiet microwave. :p

You could always mod a microwave :)
Never done it myself but the magnetron in a microwave is easy to spot if you open one up. Be careful as voltages are in the 3-4KV range, let it sit for about an hour before opening to give time for the capacitor to self discharge. Attach a large heatsink to the magnetron and you could make it silent if you had one large enough. Microwave oven manufacturers use a fan because its effective and cheap.

You could mod the microwave. Remove the speaker (probably more like a "beeper" so it will be small) and you can maybe replace the fan with one that is more quiet just ensure it pushes enough air or you'll fry the microwave. Or you could water cool instead! now THAT would be a slashdot worthy mod. Watercooling a microwave. :p

My current microwave is too old to be sinking extra cooling $$ into.
I could add a window, but my model already has one. :p
