I would choose Windows 98 SE over ME.

As far as I know ME is Windows 98 TE (Third Edition) even more bloated but with lots more built in multimedia crap.

As far as I know 98 is Windows 95 SE (Second Edition) even more bloated but with lots more built in multimedia crap.

my expericence w/ me sucked. the only thing i liked about it was the extremely fast bootup time. but since i don't turn off my comp that much anymore, i don't care. programs load up slower. actually...it made me feel the whole computer was running slower. i switched back to win98 se and was ok about everything. just when i had to restart because of installing drivers or software i hated waiting for the bootup. the stability of ME is better but it still can cause crashes [one incident was playing a game online and my screen totally screwed up and i couldn't fix it so i formatted. so now i'm using win2k. the only bad experience i had with it was when i was testing out the burnproof of my cdrw and fooled around with the cdrw properties while burning...that's when it crashed. so if you're asking for a recommendation...win2k is the only way to go

I had a very positive experience with WinME. It booted up fast, was much more stable, and for the most part was generally faster. I am currently using Win2000 because I love stabilityl but if I had to choose between 98 and ME my choice would definetly be ME.

I've worked with all three: Win98SE, WinME and Win2K. My advice is to stick with Win98SE or move up to Win2K. Leave WinME for computer novices who don't know any better.

Win ME is just so buggy, I`ve used it on my computer, I`ve installed it on friends computers and we have all gone back to win98se, I currently dual boot win2k and win98se. Now my moms computer with win ME totally sucks, but my dads computer is very stable (well at least that`s what he tells me). My mom know`s nothing about computers, but she was constintly calling me up and asking me why my her computer what shut down and what does this blue screen meen and why does internet freeze and all that, so I put win98se back on and I`ve never heard from her.

I guess it depends on the computer configuration. Maybe winME is more buggy on others.

For now, I will choose win 98 SE it's more stable than win ME.
but if you want more stable then win2k pro would be your best choice or Linux(but then not many games develop in linux env.)

They couldn't pay me to run Win ME on my system!! Since upgrading to win 2000 I have to say that it is far superior. I can tolerate win98 once you have it tuned with at least 256 megs of memory.

Once you go win2k, there is no turning back.

I installed winme on my friends computer...nice boot time. I removed all the the crap that starts up with msconfig, and it runs on par with win98se, boots faster than win9x/win2k, and "looks" like win2k.

Well, I've used all three, and for my two sibling's computers, I ended up installing WinME on their computers. I find it a little more stable, and teh system restore feature saved them a couple of times. Overall, I think it runs faster than Win98SE or just as fast. In addition, I like the look that it shares with Win2K. On my own computer I am now dual booting WinME and Win2K. Only because the other two computers in my house are running WinME, and I figured it would be good for the network if I ran WinME too. But I hardly ever use it, only a back up when Win2K crashes (yes, three times in less than 12 days).

If you know what you are doing with computers, and can stand fiddling around with the os, go with the Win98SE. You'll have to install the service packs and the multitudes of other updates. If not, then just go with WinME, you won't lose much in performance, gain some in others, and the multimedia add ons are actually useful. I didn't even have to install drivers when I connected my digital camera to one of the WinME computers to transfer pics.

At the end though, you'll want to move up to Win2K, and Win2Kse (Whistler) when that ships...

WinME is definetely more bloated. It has system restore, Movie Maker, and a lot of other things I never use, or I've disable. I've never used Win98SE, only Win98, and I'd take WinME over 98, but since I think I've disabled or removed most of the "features" that offset WinME from 98SE...well...it's your call

I'm using WinME and although it had a few niggling bugs, they seem to have settled down and since gone. As much the same with any new OS. Win98SE also had a few minor glitches. Once you get used to installing any OS a couple of times the system becomes more stable.

WinME is stable on my system. It is however very slightly slower in terms of speed when comparing Q3A etc (so some sites report) and other standard benchmarking software, but not enough to notice. Now that more and more hardware drivers are being released for WinME, stability I feel is not so much of an issue as it first did when it first arrived on the scene.

Yes, WinME is bloated a tad more than Win98SE, but you can if you want choose not to install some of the bloatware if you choose not to.

Having said that, I like it. I take exception to the comment that ppl who use WinME are ppl who, insofar as windows is concerned, don't know better. (That's complete crap).

The consensus is that Win98SE is better. Although I would say at this time that not everyone's system is the same, so there are bound to be problems with any OS's.

The benefit Win98SE has over WinME, is that it's cheaper and as someone said, you don't get as much bloatware. I like the new MediaPlayer ;) There is not that much to choose between them.

I've had Win95, Win95 OSR2, Win98, Win98SE and finally WinME and will get Whistler when it arrives and can honestly say, apart from the uppercase characters in explorer, I like WinME.

;)

Im using WinMe and I dont really have any problems. I think its much more stable then 98 and the boot up time is so much faster. But im gonna be putting Win2k on soon. That should be much better.

When SE came out, the general consensus was that 98 regular was better. Now we have the same situation with ME, only people are saying now that SE is better. What that means I am not sure, but I installed and worked with SE when people were crying about it, and now I am using ME. I have 3 computers and 2 printers networked with ME. In my opinion ME is a better OS then SE. For the way these 3 computers are used it also edges out Win2k. There are some bugs with IE but ME like 2k seems to be recoverable.
Outside of the IE bugs ME runs stable and smooth ..............I guess that makes me a novice.

I didnt have any trouble with ME, but I did a clean install. I've heard some horror stories about upgrading from 95/98/98SE

Two of our machines are clean installs of ME.....the other is my sons. It started as a 9 gig Seagate on a BH6 with a Celly 450a with a clean install of SE. Then it was upgraded to ME over SE. Next the drive was replaced by a Quantum 30 gig, we imaged the Seagate to the Quantum. Finally the BH6 and 450a were replaced by a 700 Duron on an Abit KT7. The Duron was overclocked to 900 mhz. Since the original SE install it has not been reformatted.
That machine is running sweet, in fact he has had 0 problems. Believe me if there were any I would hear about them. His Duron system blows my P3 550E at 733 on an SH6 away in SiSoft Sandra.

----my rig------------------------his rig
P3 550E at 733 SH6----------Duron 700 at 900 KT7
