___ Those that are married... are you prepared? ___

I was thinking through the type of information that my wife would need in the event of my death.
We have no children. I know it would be a hectic and overwhelming time. I'd like to make things as smooth and easy as I can for her.

* Style and coloring of casket I prefer (but it would be totally up to her).
* Place of burial (again, totally up to her).
* Insurance policy numbers with the corresponding telephone contact numbers.
* Retirement investment through my employer with corresponding telephone contact numbers.
* Any other investments along with corresponding telephone contact numbers.
* Advice I could leave with her to on small, everyday issues... where to get the cars serviced, who to contact about upkeep on the house and yard.
* Name and phone number of a good friend of mine, that I've shared my thoughts with. He could help her understand my views on some practical issues facing her.

Have those of you who are married discussed these types of things with your spouse? Are there things that you would add to my list?

* Insurance policy numbers with the corresponding telephone contact numbers. I'd be in trouble if she died, but, I'm sure I could find it in her excellen filing system
* Retirement investment through my employer with corresponding telephone contact numbers. I think that wouldn't be so hard to find, in said filing cabinet.
* Any other investments along with corresponding telephone contact numbers. Ditto
* Advice I could leave with her to on small, everyday issues... where to get the cars serviced, who to contact about upkeep on the house and yard. Would be rough, but, friends family to help

I like to not think about it. I'll play the odds.

[edit]I think I closed my tags right this time[/edit]

I think it's a good to talk about it with the spouse
so that the spouse feels less helpless later on when they are on their own

#1 - Maybe. I mean ... I could understand ...
#2 - SHE is supposed to be the one you share your thoughts with. Marriage is sealing the deal with your best friend for life.

Play the odds? Like, maybe you won't ever die?

Bake me and shake me. If they don't want to spread the ashes, keep me in an empty guinness bottle on the mantle.

I understand that. But when I check out, she may not be able to clearly rewind our conversations in her head. I hope she'll be a little upset when I'm gone and need someone to help guide her through the types of things she'll need to take care of.
😛

LOL!

If the Mister dies before I do, I have to take his ashes for a hike up to the top of his favorite mountain. My ashes can be used to fertilize my garden. And I have to assure his family that he was 'saved' before he died, even though he doesn't believe like they do anymore. If I go before he does, he has to keep his family a good pace away from mine, because if they say it is a shame I'm not going to heaven (or anything else rude) I can't promise that certain family members of mine won't ask them to step outside. 😛 Funny the details that concern us!

It is actually very important to discuss this stuff... death is a natural part of life, may as well get used to it.

This is all stuff on my list of things to do with my fiancee before we get hitched.

That, and making an appointment with my insurance agent.

When you're 29 years old and suffer congestive heart failure, get turned away from the ER twice and nearly die, you don't have a choice but to discuss these things.

One thing that I didin't see on your list was TOD (Transfer on Death) on your auto title.

Also, my father recently passed away. You'd be amazed how much him and mom and discussed before his death.

I think you are doing a wise thing. It never hurts to be prepared for the one thing that everybody faces at one time or another.

My wife and I have been married for just over a year, and we hardly talk about these things. HOWEVER, she knows just as much about these issues as I do. She will call the insurance company as often as I will...

Show knows as much as I do about retirement. It's nice to have a wife who wants to know stuff.

My wife knows about most of the issues I covered.
I figured having all the information in one place would help her deal with things easier. Maybe even have the info. on a CDR along with a message or two from me.

I guess that I could still boss her around... even from the grave!
Just joking. 😉

Since our daughter was born, we have been discussing issues related to one or both of us croaking on a more frequent basis. We're taking steps to get everything in order so that our daughter is properly taken care of. As to my dead body, I just told my wife to take it out to sea and feed me to the fish. Don't know if she'll do that though and it's probably not legal.
