I'm fixing up an old AT system for single dad with 3 small kids to take care of.

Specs...
FIC 503+ / K62-400 / Quantum Banshee AGP / AWE 64 / 384MB RAM / Lucent Winmodem / 8.4GB WD / Windows 98
The budget for this system is maxed out at this point.

After every reboot the machine reverts back to "Default Monitor" and it's 640x480 resolution. I can remove or disable the default monitor in the device manager, and leave the current monitor. Using the Compaq monitor, the resolution can be adjusted to whatever the Banshee card can give.
But even with the default monitor disabled, it will revert back after a reboot.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation?

suggest you boot up in safe mode & delete all instances of your monitor & videocard then reboot!
sounds like you have ghost entries.

I deleted all monitors while in Safe Mode. The first reboot after doing that got the correct monitor back with the higher resolution settings. But the 2nd reboot takes it back to "Default Monitor".
I've went through the monitor removal twice in Safe Mode, but still get back default monitor after the 2nd reboot. :(

I didn't install any of my monitor drivers. The system will end up with another monitor. A freebie his dad is kicking in.

Well install the inf file for the monitor you are testing with and see if that fixes it. If it does, be sure to have them install the inf file for the monitor they will be using. The inf file is not technically a driver, it is really a list of the supported frequencies and resolutions for the monitor so the graphic driver knows what to use. You can actually open it up and edit it with a text editor if you know what you are doing.

Well, I thought my problem was solved by loading the inf. But on the second reboot it reverted back to 640x480 default monitor status. :(

That`s a VIA board right? So did you install the VIA AGP driver, for Win98 the (4.43) 4 -in- 1 drivers is supposed to be good.

I did download the VIA AGP drivers... no change.

BUT, call me dumb, call me stupid, call me an idiot... whatever you do call me to breakfast!

I found the golden key to unlock my problem...
* Righ Click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor > Default changed to Compaq P110

Three reboots later and the resolution hasn't changed from 1024x768! :D

THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP! :D I love the AnandTech Forums! You guys ROCK.
