The status on the profile may show the last time they logged in. If they have not logged out, then they are still on and able to post. The light bulb indicates if they are currently active.

I never log out and it shows that I last visited on3/21 at 8:18 AM. Don't know if it works differently for others.
 
If someone is logged out and they just put their username and password in to post a single message it doesn't seem update the last login time.
 
The person was not logged in when I sent them a PM on 3/19/04. I kept checking their profile to see if they had a chance to read my PM.
Then I saw that they had logged in, bumped their thread and logged back out without their profile ever indicating that.

For them to have bumped their thread, they would have had to have been logged in. 😱 I'm baffled.
