Right now, my 95 S10 has an in-dash AM/FM Cassette LIkE ThIs. I'd like to change it out for a nice CD/MP3 unit.
Is there a special adapter plate I will need to buy, or do new CD/MP3 units come with eveything I need for installation in my S10?

BTW, I'm thinking of a Sony or JVC CD/MP3.

Thanks for helping a country bumpkin' lost in the audio world. :D

you would need an adapter of some type, the stock stereo is DIN and a Half (correct me if I'm wrong here).
It would probably be best if you let wherever you buy the stereo from install it for you, CC, and Best Buy offer free instalation (labor costs) to install one on any head unit over $99.

I seriously thought about having it installed, since the dash is so jam packed. I'm sure they could do it many times faster than I could.

Building a PC fast, is easy for me. But I'm afraid I'd get stalled out with the in-dash unit. I've got an Alpine amp and Kicker speakers (behind the seat), from my other S10.
Would Best Buy have any problem installing them with the CD/MP3, or would they balk at that?

They would probably install it, but you would have to pay them and its not all that cheap.

Take it to a professional car audio installation place, if it is just a deck it wouldn't cost that much to have them install it for you.

They'll charge you more for it, and do a terrible job. If you really are dead set on having it installed, go to a real car stereo shop and have them do it. They'll probably charge you more for the wiring harness/install kit too.

I did it on my 95 Blazer, it was pretty easy, did the whole thing in under a day. The reason it took as long as it did was two-fold. First, I hooked up my CD Changer to the wrong input on my radio (the non-volume modulated one - so the volume was at max no matter what the radio was set at) and second, the antenna adapter gave me all kinds of trouble. The one I bought had a long plug on it connected to a flexable cable for the OEM antenna hookup. The problem is, because the connector was so long, it kept hitting the back of the "well" for the radio. I had to custom make an antenna adapter out of the one I bought - it's probably not as good as the unmodified one, but I have XM and a CD changer, so I very rarely listen to the radio.

The damn CD Changer thing really baffled me - I don't remember how I thought to check the inputs

Like I said, spend the extra cash and take it to a professional stereo place, I've got to think it'd be worth it. Bestbuy installed a stereo in my sisters car, in the process they screwed up the alarm and half her dash lights didn't work. She took it back, they "fixed" it, but they never assmbled the dash correctly so it kind of looks screwy.

I'm thinking my front channel (dash), speakers are close to shot. They sound fine most of the time. But they get distortion when heavy bass notes are played.
Maybe my wife's car will get the Alpine amp and kickers and my truck can get a fresh make-over,
Are full system installs free at Best Buy?

The install is never "Free" at bestbuy. They're going to charge you for any wiring/adapters/install kits they need. A $20 install kit you can buy at autozone is going to cost $40-50 there.

My front speakers are shot too - same issue as you, it gets pretty distorted at high volumes - I don't usually listen to it that loudly anyway so it's not a big issue for me. You could probably replace the front speakers yourself if you felt daring, they *may* pop rivited into place (which would make getting them out difficult), I know the front door and rear speakers are pop riveted in place on mine
