Everyone already knew for the most part how Rouge One would be.

The Force Awakens told a new story for the most part. There's no way to tell it all within 3 hours and have it not be all over the place. That's why there's sequels.

This guy has some pretty awesome theories on The Force Awakens that made the movie make a lot more sense to me.
