__ Do prcelain veneers hold up? __

Blain

Lifer
I've got a chipped front tooth. I've had a root canal done on it a long time ago. It's slightly discolored because of the blood/pulp left in the tooth after the root canal.

It's finally got to the point that it's appearance is bugging me. Basically my three options are cap/crown the tooth, pull it and install ss pin in my upper jawbone then a replacement tooth or go with a porcelain veneer.

I like the idea of the verneers. But do they hold up over time?

Thanks 😀

Wondering about them things my self..have a chippedfront tooth..kinda like wall paper for your teeth.

Porcelain veneers do hold up. However a porcelain crown will be alot cheaper than a porcelain veneer.

Veneers are cosmetic denistry, usually you would get your whole mouth veneered not just a tooth. The whole mouth runs upwards to $80,000.

It's just the one tooth that's discolored. I can't see doing my whole mouth, when that single tooth can be color matched to the others.
Like my sig says "...in search of the biggest bang for the buck!" 😛

I believe a porcelain crown will be still cheaper. A porcelian crown runs $500-$750. Have you recieved a price qoute?

Another vote for a porcelain crown.

Just one caveat ... make sure the color matches before the dentist cements it. If not it will really stand out.

I understand the veneers cost at least as much as a crown. It seemes to me the way to go is with a crown, at least the entire tooth is protected.

I was thinking that the crown only replaced the missing part of the tooth.
Color matching is important. I've seen several that do stand out because of poor color matching.

Crowns cover the entire tooth, to the gum line. Its surpising you didn't get one after your root canal, they generally try to sell you one afterwards.

I have a couple.. they work fine, and look great. The color match is very important, as well as the skill of your dentist.

Blain,
a crown will cover the whole tooth, not just the missing portion. It's more like a thick veneer that wraps all the way around the tooth. A crown is stronger because it covers the whole tooth, but a properly done veneer will last just as long. As for cheaper, fees vary at every practice, but it's been my experience that they are about the same. I would generally recommend a crown because, as L vis said, it covers the whole tooth and is more protective. Something else to think about- matching porcelain for a single anterior tooth is about the hardest thing for a dentist to do. While possible, it's difficult. A crown that really stands out is because the shade is too light; a slightly darker shade actually blends in better. For optimal aesthetics, it's best to get more than one tooth crowned/veneered. Not the whole mouth, but more likely 6 teeth- from canine to canine. If only one tooth is crowned, at the delivery appointment be sure to look at the crown in several different lights (i.e. flourescent, natural sunlight) to make sure it matches.

I had a bridge done by my current dentist that was porcelain outside over gold. He did a good job matching the color of it. He's very helpful about suggesting this that and the other.
I was just curious about how verneers hold up over time.
From what I've read they are fairly thin and would allow some coloration to show through from the base tooth. I think that may be a problem since part of the tooth would be added for the chipped area.
