9th Circuit Court Hearing LIVE on KTVU in SF Bayarea

what is this?

This is the Court hearing to decide if the punch card ballots that will be used for 44% of all total registered voters (that are in the six counties affected) are allowable based on CA voters decision ( Amendment to CA Constitution) to replace the punch card system prior to any other election being held.
This has to do with the predominance of minority voters in those affected counties potentially having their votes discarded due to the problems with punch card ballots.
The ACLU, etal, maintains this will cause a disproportionate number of minority votes being discarded as a result of the old machines being used in those counties versus the new more accurate machines being used elsewhere in counties with fewer minority voters.
Thus denying equal protection of the law to all voters.
This would mean you're vote may be discarded and you not allowed to recast you vote simply because of a problem (CHADs anyone?) with the punch card ballot.

Seems simple to me, make sure your damn ballot is correct before you hand it in, period. I don't care what the system is, it should be that simple.

Unfortunatly, they are arguing that minorities(me included)are too stupid to figure this out. I find it extremly insulting.

I see it more as being that inspite of the best efforts of the voters to get it, those ballots are more likely to be discarded to due the possibility of unreliable counting due to the discrepancy in what constitutes a "cast vote".
Thus, those voters, who happen to be minorities, will be denied their vote.
As in the debate in Florida , the Dade County vote specifically.

i think if you're too stupid to properly use a voting machine you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

but then people think this is a democracy.

Yeah! When did we go from a republic (I pledge allegience to the republic for which it stands) to a democracy?

Yes, only qualified ENIAC punchcard programmers should be allowed to vote.

I'd settle for someone with an IQ over 20 who could at least name the incumbant.

it's a start anyways

I didn't realize that you put your race on your ballot when voting.

What the hell happened to common sense?? A baby can punch an object through a paper. If there's a single "hanging chad" I think we can safely assume that the person stuck the punching implement in there. Isn't that fairly obvious?

Did they do a speed test to see how long on average it takes to find a candidate on a randomly sorted list of 140 and properly punch the hole and do QC to make sure there are no hanging chads?
That would be important to deciding how many locations need to be open and how many people need to be staffing them.

You don't. But neighborhoods can be racially pre-dominant in one way or the other. The distribution of races in the total sample of ballots is skewed from district to district.
Your staement is an obfuscation of the issue that it was the boxes of ballots from predominantly Black and / or Jewish neighborhoods that went missing , disputed in FLA.

I thought you were talking about the punch card ballots and the minority vote?

Again, I didn't know that you put your race on a ballot, because how would you know that only minority votes are being thrown out. You and the others are assuming that since the vote comes from a predominantly minority district, that it must be a minorities vote being thrown out. Unless the district is 100% minority, the minority vote has the same chance of being invalid as anyone elses.

You keep repeating something that is a red herring. You don't put your race on a ballot. No one has said ONLY minority votes are affected, only that there is a greater chance of being affected and THAT is the difference that the law is supposed to provide equal protection from.
