I seem to recall that they were selling these bare drives in the high $30 range. So the case and drive together would be reasonable for $54. Lark

That's a pretty darned good price for a 9GB SCSI in external case...it's only Fast SCSI-2 (10MB/sec) but it would be good for a backup drive/MP3 storage. As has been discussed in other threads, this is a great SCSI case, most places would charge you this much for the case alone. The drive is a Seagate ST410800N, seems I remember hearing there were reliability problems with this series of full-height drives. Any truth to that?

Best regards,
Floyd

5 year warranty on those drives. Most of the warranties are just about run out. They run HOT HOT HOT, noisy. etc.

I've had a pair of these drives... refurbs. They work great for backups (!!!) and MP3s.. Never had a heat or noise problem (actually, I had one that had a noise problem and it got replaced). Remember... full height 5.25" drive! It had better be in an external case ;)

For those who prefer the drive without an external case, here is the link. About $42.50 plus shipping. Drive could be a refurbished unit or system pull...

Dudes.. I have one of these guys internal... lets just say in a mid tower, it weights MORE than the whole computer itself. Almost makes it tipping over... Too much jumpers to set also.. But this is external so should be okay

Remember if you get one of these that the maximum cable length for FastSCSI2 is 3 meters. So the length of your internal 50-pin cable plus the length of your external 50-pin cable should be less than this.

CGS, if you're still monitoring this thread, please add something more descriptive to the thread title...like "9.1GB ext SCSI for $54". I think that would grab a lot of people's attention. I almost overlooked it myself because I don't usually click threads with vague titles.

Best regards,
Floyd

This is nothing big. If you go to any auction site you can find alot of these cheap types of hard drives, Samsung 9gb SCSI drives that are worthless, since the RPM is only 5400.

Can't believe you say this is worthless. Any 9 Gig SCSI drive, even at 5400 RPM is a deal at $54. And most SCSI drives I've used outperform the IDE drives at the next RPM stepping. I'm tempted to get this for my burning system.

Yes, definitely not worthless. A 9GB drive of any flavor at $54 is a deal. Even IDE at this price is very rare, refurb/system pull or not. Throw in a full-height external case and then you're looking at a very good deal. Again I say, modify the thread title.

I think that the drive is a full-height drive lowers its value a bit. But I agree that this is a very good deal. If I had money to spare, I would pick one up.

By the way, if you want to know how many of these ComputerGeeks has left, just try to order a very large number of them, such as 1000. It'll then give you an error saying they only have XX left, where XX is the number left in their inventory.

They are part of the Master Card Exclusives program. This is from the M/C web page:

<< MasterCard cardholders will receive a 10% discount on any Internet order. Just enter "MC Exclusives" in the customer comments section when placing your order. Not applicable to items already marked as Special. >>

EDIT: Stupid me, by full height they mean FULL height, I was thinking of the old drives that took a single 5.25 bay, haven't seen one this big in years if ever actually. Thing takes 2 5.25 bays? Wow.

Question still applies though - with a half-height drive though I guess.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Just looked, I know a guy who could definately use this deal. Thing that worries me is the heat factor, would it be excessive if you had that HD and your CDR both in that case? (looks to have 2 drive bays so they should both fit). I see the case has a fan, but with two units in there it'd be tighter, less airflow..anyway, opinions?

Thanks

If you don't care about the enclosure, Egghead has 22GB Seagates SCSI UW ST423451W drives going for $70-$80. They're advertised as new, however, they shipped me a factory refurbed one, so I got them to knock off another $20. Ended up paying $59 for it. Not bad....

Along the lines of full-height drives, I have a Seagate 23 GB refurb SCSi that I got for $100. Using it in a mid-tower case with lots of fans. It's up top AWAY from the CD-RW and works good. Top-Heavy though!
