What do you guys think? My friend got the Dakota just a couple of weeks ago and it seems pretty strong V8.

Well here's the spec for the 99 Dakota:

5.9L V-8
250 hp
350 lbs of torque
and some BPU

Mine 92 300Z (5-speed stick shift):

3.0L V-6
222 hp
198 lbs of torque
and JWT air intake.

What do you guys think if we race? I rode in his truck and it's a torque monster!

I had a dakota r/t once.

Alot of very reliable cars don't have lube fittings. It means nothing.

But I do agree that Dakotas are poopoo.

The race will depend on how well you can drive a 5spd and what kid of mechanical condition your 11yo car is in.

my car is in excellent condition. The previous owner was a enthusiast so i took very good care of it. He has all the maintenance records and the paint looks like it only sits in garage.

115,000 miles and drive like new. Everything is original in the car. Other than the regular schedule maintenance, There's no part that was needed to replaced as far as i know. I still can't believed everything is original in the car (engine, transmission,etc....)

The car is still using mobil 1 synthetic, redline transmission and diff. oil. do you guys think if it's ok for me to switch to regular oil? cause the engine is old i think it would benefit from regular oil because it seal things up better.

I think the Dakota will get the jump off the line with the extra torque... but the Z will reel him in depending on how far they race.

But like Laust said... take it to a track. Don't let your next post be "So I was racing my friend through our neighborhood..."

I've got that exact truck. Been very happy with it. Not a monster off the line but down the track it is very powerful. Have outrun many a car in my day...

I found this:

Those are some good times.

>I took my '99 RT RC to Carlsbad raceway yesterday
>to get some 'stock' runs in before I get my exhaust done,
>headers, etc. etc.

>Of my 3 runs, I had a low 60' time of 2.314, and a high
>of 2.358 seconds.
>1/8th mile was 9.945 low, and a 9.976 high.
>with speeds in the 70.67 mph range (all with .2 mph)
>My 1/4 mile times were a best of 15.555, and the highest
>a 15.610.... Speeds on all three runs were in the 88.69 range
>(all within .2 mph)

>Compared to other experiences at Carlsbad, the track was
>very sticky (hardly spun the tires on the start), and I was able
>to get 3 runs in about an hour (which never happens).

Kroze: I hang out on a Dakota message board where debates on the 4.7+5 speed vs. R/T have finally ceased (they're almost exactly the same). 15.1 to 15.4 is the norm. The 4.7 guys times vary a bit more since it's more driver dependant. So those times are a little slow, but not far off.

So i guess it's really up to the driver in this case then eh? I think he'll beat me then. I'm fairly new at stick shift and the Z is my first stick shift car. His is an automatic.

I sucks at launching so i guess i should convince him to do it from a roll eh hehe.

Although I'd like to see the Dakota win, if you want to make it easier on yourself find a place w/ dirty pavement. It's easy to waste a second or two with a smoke show when you're driving a sport truck.

I think the same thing. The Nissan is only 30 HP less, although the torque on those is a touch under 200, but once you get enough speed going you can take him because your car doesn't way anything near that truck.

I think you'll win off the line, not sure over distance....

I raced my friend in his mom's Suburban once (I have a 1995 240sx). I convinced him to start from a roll since I can't launch. We were neck and neck until I shifted to 5th instead of 3rd.

Yep, and that's why the dakota will lose if the race is long enough :D

I would keep using the Mobil 1. Does it leak oil?

No, that's why the race is close. Why the Dakota will lose in a longer race involves gearing and the fact that it's an aerodynamic brick.

I've got a 5.9 Durango and a 91 Z Twin Turbo.

The dakota is going to KILL you off the line, and quite possibly for some time thereafter. :) If you plan on racing him, you'll be much better off using aerodyamics (his lack thereof) to your advantage and starting at a higher speed.

I'd put my money on a 4.7, 5 speed (the truck I want).. over a 5.9 R/T.

the 4.7 is wicked :D

oh my god DO NOT SWITCH back to regular oil... this can lead to very large problems... why'd you want to take a good thing away from your engine? not to sound like a bum but it makes 0 sense to me.. keep using mobil.. or switch to amsoil :D

Nah I think the Z will hose the truck, unless you get a crappy reaction time with your stick.
