Also, not really looking at any euros at this point

Should add that I don't know if it's just this area or what, but I'm not seeing any deals anywhere close to that one you mentioned. I'm seeing those kinds of prices for cars like that with 160-180k miles, which I won't even think about going near on a 90's Buick or something like that

Going to check out the 2003 Protege in the next couple of days. Have it looked at, test drive, and if all looks good be on my way. Really seems like one of the better deals in the area right now.

I'll report back later, haha :)

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Doppel, curious what you think about the 2004 Mazda6 if I could get the price down a bit

in comparison to the Protege, I mean.

the Mazda6 actually looks really good to me. Plus it's manual, pretty new clutch too. The cd/stereo perks are nice too although not a primary thing for me at all, I can buy a $150 receiver and be set with any car. Price does seem good though.
Definitely would take over a late 90's civic or accord or similar, they are pretty good cars.

Well, I bit... went for the '03 Protege. I think I got a hell of a deal, really. No issues of any significance at all mechanically, in near-perfect shape inside and out.

Now I just need some practice. Felt like I was driving for the first time again, haha. But after just a little while driving today I'm already starting to get kinda comfortable with driving manual. Think I'll really enjoy it once it feels natural.

Sweet, I think that was among the best vehicles you've listed

Moving from a stop on a steep incline makes baby jesus cry. :(

After relatively little time put into this so far I'm basically comfortable with everything else. Taking off and my 1st->2nd shifts are still not the smoothest sometimes but beyond that I'm surprisingly used to it already.

Just need to figure out the feel for the clutch/gas balance on a hill before I actually have to do it in any kind of traffic... everyone keeps saying it'll just take time and practice but right now I'm like OMG OMG OMG. lol :\

Hills are the hardest for sure! Use the handbrake to prevent slipping back and one day you may be good enough to not need it (and not fall too far back).
