first of all the FAQ states

"If you have WinNT4 or Win2K already up and running on your system ...

... and you want to install Win98, Win98SE or WinME ...

... but you realize that just running 'setup' for the Win9x install will rewrite the MBR ...

PLEASE TRY using the command setup /ntldr to install Win98/SE/ME.

It is *supposed* to just add the new OS to the NT boot loader without obliterating the existing MBR. I have used this command a good number of times with much success.

WITH THAT SAID, ...

Play it safe. Make an emergency repair floppy from WinNT4 (RDISK.EXE) / Win2K(backup accessory) and have the bootable CD ready. You *may* still have to *repair* the MBR back to it's NT loader state.

If you do happen to find that Win98/SE/ME has overwritten the Win2K MBR and Boot Menu, boot up from the Win2K CDROM and perform a repair installation (by hitting R when prompted).

Either use the Recovery Console, and type in the command fixboot, or allow Win2K to perform an automatic or manual repair. If you perform a manual repair, make sure you select Inspect Boot Files.

My question is for 98 after xp installation, I knoww2k and wp are almost the same and that this should work just want some re-assurance from some one who has done this

situation:

got my new 8200 dell laptop for gaming, and the first thing I did was format the hard drive and re-partition the hd to 5gb 5gb and 10gb.
I installed xp corp ed on c: and have my programs on d:
What I want is to install 98 on e: drive for those rare games that will not work on xp.

all partitions are fat32.

Just a yes this should work or yes I did this on my computer is what I need.

Peace
