$981 for a new fuel pump for my Saab

The car is stunningly comfortable to drive and looks sweet, but I don't know how much more of this I can take. Can anybody confirm that if this was a Chevy or Honda that this part would cost half as much? It's a '95 and I bought it new.

I would assume that includes labor? I would guess a fuel pump/assembly for your car will range anywhere from $400-$500 plus install. It is not hard to do, but lowering the tank can suck if it's full, as you could guess.

EDIT: after looking at prices, I do not see a massive markup for pumps on your car. Looks like you should be able to get it for around $200.

At my shop we always use a controlled burn to empty the tank. Sounds dangerous, but with some aquarium hose and PVC piping you can clean out a full tank in a few minutes, and then get to the fuel pump!

Alldata has the fuel pump for a 95 saab 900 s sedan @ $483 and 1.8 hours of labor
Labor rates will be different from shop to shop and you might be able to get an aftermarket fuel pump cheaper.

You could save money doing the controlled burn thing Skoorb suggested 😕

You bought a Saab? Saab's dealers can't even keep them running...

Last fuel pump I bought was for a Honda, cost a whopping $98.

It's a long known fact Saabs are insanly expensive to fix.

Usually thats part of the research phase when you buy a car.

Yeah, but I got this as a gift 9 years ago when I was 19 so what the hell did I care/know.

BTW, this pump went out in the DMV parking lot after I'd just spent 4.5 hours inside renewing my license. It was in the high 40's and raining. The guy parked next to me thought I'd like to know he spent $300 on his Volvo station wagon which has never failed to start. 🙂

Is that from a dealer or independent also if you live in a city or outside of the north east then the cost will be higher.

About 7 years ago, I owned a Chevrolet Corsica and the fuel pump went out. $250 (parts and labor) to replace it. Dayum, those Saab parts are not cheap.

Yup I used to do detail work for a well to do Saab Dealership in Hingham Mass and from what I gathered from the mechanics their cars were service nightmares...very expensive to fix and constantly in the shop....honestly I am not surprised they are charging $900 for that, heck Ford wanted $300 for mine from the factory....you are better off going to a local yocal who specializes in foreign cars and having them do it if you want to spend less...good luck.

Ouch. The fuel pump assembly alone costs about $438, becuase its integrated with the level sender and what not. But you can purchase just the pump for about $120. Get yourself a manual and do it yourself, unless the thought of a whole bunch of gasoline scares ya.

Heh, I love my 2000 9-5. I've had very few problems from it.

The only real problems I've had are burnt out bulbs.
