9800XT Reviews

The card looks great and is very fast at default speeds but I'll keep my 9800np flashed to pro and overclocked instead. Much better value. 😀

Thanks for the review links! 😀

WOW, HardOCP is really pumped about this card.

"As good as it's going to get this year" eh?

And a possibility of HL2 being bundled, even before it hits the shelves?

Hmmmm .... ?

Must .... resist .... hype

9700Pro ....... still ....... good ........card

LOL

From the Rage3d Preview on the 9800XT:

"As a side note, the high clock speeds introduced timing issues between the chip I/O pads and core logic, which was solved by Delay Lock Loops. These Delay Lock Loops are the cause of the weird core speed."

And on the 9600XT:

"The Radeon 9600 XT will also include OverDrive technology. *snip* OverDrive won't be available on the Radeon 9600 XT until Catalyst 3.9."

"ATI will only have one configuration, a 500MHz core clock with 128MB DDR clocked at 300MHz (600MHz effective) with VGA, DVI AND VO outputs. "

"Both the Radeon 9800 XT and Radeon 9600 XT will be shipping in October at MSRP $399 and $199 respectively. "

I think the xts's ar kinda bs, they seem like they just went through and handpicked chips that could run at higher speeds. Its just an overclocked 9800 or 9600 and a way for them to milk dollars out of us (well not me). The 9600xt seems like really bs, since the prime cards that reviewers got all o/c over 500.

You are neglecting to note that the 9600xt is built on the low-k 0.13um process. I would venture to say that it should overclock quite well beyond the stock 500mhz. $199 for that card bundled with half-life 2 is an amazing deal.

There are also early signs that the 9800xt will easily hit over 460mhz core speed (see the HardOCP article at the end)...simply amazing.

shabby, it sells for $400, not $500.

Medicated858, true, but the XTs have hardware monitoring allowing for dynamic o/c & come with a free Half Life 2 game. I would not update if I have new hardware, but for those of us on old hardware .....

The 9800XT is not worth upgrading to for anyone that has a 9700pro, 9800np or 9800Pro. But for those of us who did not buy those cards this time around, its a nice card. 🙂

Plus, anyone who got hustled and bought an FX, sounds like a good time to return it for your money back. 😛

very slight increase of performance.
not worth the price just yet.

However, I must admit I like the new outlook of the card.
Its FIERCE!

shabby, Rage3d said it was going for $399 (see my quote of their article above). Looking around I see now where others contradict it. My guess is that Rage3d is wrong and they are right. I agree with you that it is not worth $500. Sure you get 256 MB of memory, Half Life 2, etc. But the extras are not worth the extra $100 IMHO. For $399, I think that it is worth it.

I just got a pro at bestbuy for 291$... maybe ill take it back and get an XT instead?

whats teh word on price is it really only 399$?

Maybe for the lower resolutions, but for 1600x1200, it's HUGE. I was really hesistant on it, but now i'm probably going to get it unless i can find a good deal on a 9800Pro 256mb.

My monitor doesnt even display that resolution 😛

The card is nice but I'm not conviced that the performance gain over a 9700 Pro is worth paying full price.

Ok I started with the worst review site first (IMO) Tom's Hardware and from what I saw so far your getting a whopping 10FPS or less between a 9800Pro and a 9800XT 256MB. Not very impressive. The review also said the cards will only be 256MB and I'm guess that's so ATi can keep the price high without killing the 9800Pros... Also it mentioned that the HL2 bundle might only be the single player version only and you'd have to buy or upgrade to the multiplayer version later. Any one else see that in another review?

I'm off to read the rest of the reviews now 🙂

It's true that review copies overclocked really high, but companies obviously send reviewers cards that are not the norm. An example is the ridiculous overclocks reviewers got with 9600 pros, but the majority of people who bought real cards didn't even come close to those overclocks. Though the bundle of HL2 is a good deal, but we don't even know if it's a good game yet. Just cause Valve worked forever on it and it has good graphics in demos doesnt guarantee anything (Battlecruiser 3000, Unreal 2 anyone?)

I agree.

However I loved unreal 2. Still not sure why that got such a bad wrap. Sure it was cliche, but it was done well.

Well when are they expecting HL2?

They missed the benchmark thingy yesterday and have specified something about some future holiday season which could be anything from Halloween to next Labor day.

I don't even want to know how you "use" your video cards 😉.
