ok i need the help of experts here, about to buy a new VC, thinkin about the FX5900XT or 9800SE, since i heard that the 9800SE can be softmodded to XT or pro then i need guidelines:

1. what particular brand, GPU and memory size can be softmodded?
2. do i need additional cooling kits?
3. with SE there are only 4pipes enabled with 256bit interface right? with the softmod all the 8 pipes will be enabled right?
4. are the performance difference big? lets say Power Color 9800SE 128-softmodded compared to my HIS9600XT.

1. It has to be a 256bit version, with the memory configured in the L shape (if the card has all the memory chips in a row at the top, it won't work)

2. No

3. Correct. *IF* it works

4. Yes, the difference between a 9800se and a non-se is quite big. But again, the odds of it working are 50/50 at best. I know two people that bought them, and neither would mod correctly (opening up the 4 other pipelines caused the common "checkerboarding" problem that will happen).

So, it's a risky bet. It doesn't damage the card any to mod it, so if it doesn't work, just get rid of the modded drivers and you'll have a full functional 9800se still. But whether or not that's worth the price alone is up to you

9800SEs from what i have read are on par with the 9600 pros if they are un modded.(assuming both have 128 bit mem) but because the 9800se your talking about has 256Bit mem, im assuming it would be very fast still, as the 9600s are memory bandwith bottlenecked.
