This guy on Ebay reckons he's soft-modded a 9800SE card to a full 9800PRO, with 397/710 clockspeeds on the Samsung 3.3ns memory, nearly as fastr as an XT. I'm thinking about getting it but i'm just wondering will this card be all that he says it is, will it perform as a 9800PRO or faster?

9800SE modded to 9800PRO+ on Ebay.

Well you just have to watch out for artifacts. I bought one and used the soft mod to 9800 pro but you could see faint blue checkers in heavy load 3d programs. That is also not what the card looks like, it looks like a 9700 pro. I would probably say stay away from this since the guy doesnt have 2 many refrences, you will probably end up with artifacting.

I think you should be careful with this....If it is actually a 9800 SE, then it will be nowhere near the performance of a 9800 pro, even after overclocked. The 9800 SE is only a 4 pipeline design with a 128bit memory interface, which leads to pretty crappy performance compared with a 9800 pro or regular 9800. If the ebay seller is mistaken, this may be a 9800 non pro, but i'd clear this issue before bidding.

There's a 128 bit and a 256 bit version of the 9800 se. Read the ebay listing. Here's what it says:

3.3ns Samsung Chips in an L Shaped Configuration, 256bit Memory Bus

Now, originally it only has 4 pipes enabled. But, he said it successfully modded, so he unlocked the other 4, giving him 8 total. Then if he overclocked it to pro speeds it should give performance comparable to that of a 9800 pro.

well the 256 bit 9800 SE can be modded to 9800, so with some OCing, it can be taken to XT speeds. definately possible

hmm, which company produces a 256bit 9800 SE? i've yet to come across any 256bit variants.

altho... 9800NP can be found for the same price as the 9800SE.

Yup theres definately a 256-bit capable 9800SE out, and some are capable of being soft-modded into a fully-fledged 9800, but it's just a case of whether it's trustworthy or not. I suppose I could always sell it if it turns out to be crap and not lose a great deal of money, if any, by re-selling on Ebay.

Surely the Samsung memory is a good sign though? And maybe loosening the memory speeds will avoid any checkerboarding, or is that a result of unlocking the extra pipelines and nothing to do with the memory speed? So tempting...

The price is already WAY too high. It's going for £187.31 - that's over $300 US. You can buy a REAL Pro for that much!!!

Typical EBay auction of an over-hyped product. Some people just aren't thinking when they make a purchase.
