I believe the checkerboard effect is due to softmodding a card with physically damaged pipes. The 9800SE's are sometimes 9800's whos cores didn't pass QC due to non functioning pipes, and softmodding to open those up will result in artifacts and checkerboards.

Interesting... last night I was deathmatching (map was bootcamp) and everyone on the server was experiencing the checkerboard! I doubt all of us have the same video issues, so perhaps it was the server. Earlier I was playing single player and there were no strange artifacts or checkerboards, everything was awesome.

HL2

Just curious, how does your card perform in HL2? I have the 9600 pro 'ez' which is a crappy card but I got it for a great price so it was hard to pass up. It runs it fine so I expect your card does as well. I play at the recommended settings, which for me is 800x600 with pretty much medium everything. There is only stutter after loads and at a couple parts I have seen it slow down a bit. I'm using the 4.12 betas, I never did try it with the 4.11's. Are there 4.13 betas? If so has anyone tried them?

My 9600 Non Pro can run 1024 x 768 at reccomended settings (medium detail, high shaders, hi shadows, trilenar) at rates from 150 FPS inside (very simple geometry tho) to about 40 FPS on the courtyard strider battle. (no aa or af).

2x AA drops that right into unplayable land...hence the 6600GT I'm getting in January :D

I have a soft-modded 9800SE. It runs Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 fine with no artifacting. Unfortunately it is not fast enough to run anti-aliasing in Half-Life 2 with satisfactory frame rates though. :(
