9800pro overclocked to XT or stock 9800pro 256mb?

I'd say the 9800 Pro 256mb. That extra ram really comes in handy for handling demanding textures in todays high demanding games. But there are some extra shader features in the 9800 XT.

I would get the 256. Because the chances of it not overclocking are pretty slim. Also, if its a R360 core, its almost a guarantee to be flashed to a XT.

If you dont play any games in 1600x1200 with AA/AF, the extra ram alone wont give you much of a speed boost at all.

linky?

i was under the impression that the difference was- another 128mb RAM-clocked 10mhz higher...and that was about it. r360 core to the r350 meant that you could flash to the XT and unlock the temp sensor and overdrive if you were lucky.

But to return to the point- google benchies of the 9800 pro 256- usually compared to the 128mb when it came out 'cos it was it's only competition 🙂

The extra RAM is effectively worthless- any slight difference is most game benches can be explained by the slight diff in memory speeds...EXCEPT at very high res and eye candy levels -where the frame rates are unplayable unless you like your gaming powerpoint style.

That said i haven't seen a recent comparison with hl2/farcry/d3- tho i imagine these results would be repeated (i did hear/read something about an ATI driver fix that let 256mb cards use all the memory properly for one of that trio of games...)

I hold by my original suggestion- although at stock of course i'd prefer a 256mb, even for the very slight advantage it confers 🙂

thing is...i cant oc the 256...i got it in a trade and the ramsinks seem to be epoxied on 🙁

it gets maad hot and i can only get 360 or so on the mem

the 128mb is an r360 core

i havent checked the 256mb and dont need to until i can figure out a way to get the friggin ramsinks off

the 128mb flashed to xt isnt a true xt cuz it is missing half the memory of a true xt

EDIT:the ramsinks suck and its a wanabe zalman fanless cooler on there (made by thermaltake) which makes it suck for oc'ing as well...if i got a silencer on there maybe then i'd keep the 256mb for sure

Sounds like you have the thermaltake Giant II or III which are great coolers, I dont know why you have a problem with it. As far as ram sinks being epoxied on you can get them off easily by placing your card in an anti static bag and then in the freezer for a while and then twist with pliers. Be careful though. I had great success with this after I accidentally arctic silver adhesived my heatsink on my x800 PRO

hey that sounds like a good idea

but the heatsinks are flat...more like heatspreaders

so i have nothing to grab onto =

any ideas?

My guess is the 9800p (128MB) at XT speeds (what I've got) is faster than a stock 9800p with 256MB.

My 9800p will OC (both core and mem) to faster speeds than a stock XT. Maybe your's will as well.

I don't have a suggestion for the ramsinks. Personally, I'd be afraid of damage.

i have a vantec spectrum

but the thing still gets hooot

the ramsinks on there suck!!

very hot to touch...hotter than without the sinks it seems...all it does is blanket the heat

Ram sinks that are actually glued on would do nothing, probably make it hotter. You've got a bit of a mess there, you sure you can't remove them? If not then definately get rid of it for something else, it might even die soon.

Based on Tom's VGA Chart IV Here, the difference between 9800Pro, 9800Pro 256mb and 9800xt is nonexistent in today's intensive games.

In This Review you can see the difference between 9800Pro 128 mb and 9800xt 256mb. As you can see here as well, it's <10% making it negligible in the real world.

i guess i gotta make a decision then argh.

yeah its glued on there pretty good

as for getting a gt, i have a x800 xt @ pe as my main system

this 9800pro is for a seconday system

i guess i might keep the 128mb one
