Well guys, I will be building my first rig. I am in college and have looked aroung for parts. Having a video card dilemma right now. A good 9800 pro can be had for $180 now @ Newegg, while a 6800 is about a $100 more? Is there that much of a difference between the 6800 and the 9800 pro for me to consider spending $100 more? I am looking to keep this card for at least 2.5-3 yrs and although I have the cash for it, money is still tight. I do play games and will be playing them so any opinions? If it helps you I will be getting an Athlon 64 2800+ with a Chaintech vnf3-250 board and 1 gig of RAM.

if your going to keep it for 2 years than get the 6800, otherwise i would get the 9800pro and when the 6800gt's come down in price purhcase one of those 😉

EDIT: heres a good thing for ya if u get the 6800, Text

but then you would end up spending more money than if you had just bought the 6800

bingo, SOMEONE needs to take an economics class. 😉

What res do you game at?

a 9800p might get you by gaming at 10x7 for another year to 1-1/2 years . . . perhaps at 8x6 by then . . .

a 6800 might go a notch higher rez for the same amount of time with a bit faster fps for UP TO 2 years . . . you certainly wont satisfactorily get an extra year out of it over the 9800p. 😉

i went the 9800 route over 3 months ago . . . i expect to upgrade about the same time 6800 owners upgrade in 18-24 months . . . i only "require" 10x7 on my CRT to keep me gaming happy. 🙂
