9800pro or 6600GT?

9800pro specs:
256bit 128mb's DDR
8 pipelines
380MHz core
680MHz memory
Pixel fillrate 3.04 GP/s

6600GT
128bit 128mb's GDDR3
8 pipelines
525MHz core
1050MHz memory
pixel fillrate 3.93 GP/sec

Which one would you buy if the prices were about the same? Oh, the 6600GT also has the newer pixel shader 3.0 too.

I'm leaning towards the 6600GT.

Let me know what you think.

My experience was that the prices were not very equal. I shopped FS/Trade and found a good card for $50 shipped. Otherwise I would have upgraded to a 939 and PCIe.

6600GT is slightly faster despite the 128 bit memory bus, however if you are looking to buy used on FS/FT you will pay more for it.. a 9800 pro for $50 shipped is a better deal then a 6600GT for $75 shipped. If you can find a 9800XT then the performance between the two is just about equal, however GT runs cooler & uses less power then either ATI model.

If the price is the same though, its the 6600GT all the way.

The 6600GT i am looking at is 128bit, thats what only made me question which one to get since the 9800pro has 256bit.

I've never seen a 6600GT with a 256bit memory bus & I'm pretty sure they were never made... the plain vanilla 6800 (non-GT) is the cheapest 6-seris card with 256 bit, however it was only a little faster then the 6600GT & ran a lot hotter.

Take whichever one is cheaper. Although postmortem has a very good point -- 9800pros have been going like popcorn lately, I personaly know of 3 failed due to expiring fans.

Realize that agonizing over 128 bit vs 256 bit on these aging cards is pointless. The difference in modern games will be 15 fps vs 16 fps at best -- not something you'll percieve outside a synthetic benchmark.

It would make a huge difference, but aren't all 6600GT's 128 bit? Or are you talking 256MB of memory? In which case would not make that much difference.

All 6600 and 6600gt are 128bit.
The extra memory will make a difference in some games which use a lot of textures otherwise they should perform similar.

Otherwise the 6600gt is a better chice than 9800pro.

6600gt. My friend and I had 9800 pro and 6600gt(i had gt). There is a noticble difference inbetween them... especially in newer games(FEAR).
