ok newegg has the 9800pro for 159 shipped but the 9800pro is getting kinda long in the tooth is it not? i was wanting a 6600Gt because it seems to be the best bang for your buck nVidia Card that their is and im still running on my GF4 Ti4200 64mb. now the real question. 9800pro for 159 now or wait another month and get the 6600GT.
im not sure about ATI cards as i have never been a fan of them but i know that the 6600 will last as long as the 6800 will in a technology standpoint but im not sure if their is enough life left in the 9800pro for me to bother getting one. i dont wanna end up like my friend who got a Rage128pro All-In-Wonder when i had owned my nVidia TNT2 m64 for over a year and still pulled better numbers than him, and his was 150

ok... is this a pretty widely accepted idea? ive been outta the computer world for about a year now so i am lost with all this new crap... and ATI might as well have named their cards in chinese now because i have NO CLUE as to what is what anymore.

Well, I bought a 6600GT, and have not been too happy. The 9800 Pro was more expensive when I purchased the 6600GT. The first 6600GT arrived DOA, and the second one caused windows to crash after 10 minutes. I'm now on my third card, and everything ran fine for 2 weeks, and now my system is crashing again. I'm going to spend this weekend testing the card in my other three systems in my basement. Overall, I'm not too happy. I had to put my old Ti4200 back in my system - it runs perfectly stable with my old card, using the same driver. If I was buying right now, I would get the 9800 Pro.

um no. that's plain stupid to go for the 9800 pro over the 6600gt now. the 6600gt performs about 10% better then the 9800 xt, which sells for $400+ still, and the 9800xt performs only 2-3% faster then the 9800 pro.

wats your budget? if it's roughly $300ish, go for the x800xl. its about the same in performance as the 6800 gt for a lot less money.

Welcome to the forum KB, Sorry about the not so nice reception. I believe the cheapest 6600gt now is around 190 bucks. If you need a card now and can not afford the best price you find on the gt then 9800p would be the next choice. I would personally wait a month or 2 and i bet the 6600gt would be in your range. There are some cards lately advertised as gt for a low price but it is not the gt. Make sure what u get if you go with a not so reputable dealer. I have 9800p and it still does everything I need. My most recent games are rome total war and doom3. Both run excellent with the 9800p.
After looking at newegg I would definately go with this leadtek 6600gt card, I bet you can afford $185.00. This is an agp card of course. Many 6600gt's you see are probably pci-express.

I have 2 systems, run the 6600 gt and the 9800 pro. There is no real differance when playing games, they look and feel the same. In benchmarks the 6600gt gets a few more fps. I call it a toss up.

I love my 9800 non-pro. Runs doom 3 high quality 1024/768 and everything else i've played.

If you were asking whether or not to upgrade a 9800 to a 6600gt i'd say no chance, but considering you're starting from scratch, by far the best option right now is the 6600gt.

My only concern now is if i leave off upgrading for too long, by the time i find a game that doesn't run well there will be no decent agp cards available and i'll have to upgrade my entire system, motherboard, cpu and vid card. Which would suck as I just upgraded my cpu and replaced my motherboard.

So, hopefully this little system will continue to play the latest games well into 06 and hopefully 07!!

I have had a XFX 6600GT AGP I picked up from Monarch for $199 shipped a few months ago, and it is a good price-performer. I still don't understand all the belly aching about temps with 6600GTs when there are no stability or IQ issues though, people need to get a F'ing clue. This one does 565/1.14ghz on auto and has given me zero problems, and maybe some day, since I plan to put this in my kids' system when I upgrade, there will be WMV HD acceleration and perhaps even encoding support from the PVP to compliment the excellent budget gaming performance. My point is, the newer tech in the 6600GT makes it a much better choice for people who keep a vid card a few years, as the OP evidently does.
